Defender Door Handles

I am fed up sorting the cheap door handles I fitted to my 2003 Defender from SP4X4, the pivot pin has worked loose again, so am going to try new ones.

Anyone any recommendation's?

Am tempted to just spend the money on genuine ones, around £120 each as opposed to the £20 to £40 aftermarket: Britpart, allmakes etc.

Drivers door lock mechanism had seized, so out in the snow fitting a new one today!

There are a few different handle CNC alloy versions floating around from the usual suspects like Optimill which might be worth looking at, I always found my second row door mechanisms more trouble than the front but a 90 is never going to have that particular issue! Do you have central locking fitted? I think yours must be around the age they started fitting it as standard and it at least exercises every door mechanism regularly.

Aye Willie it has central locking, from googling most folk seem to recommend original ones.

The cynic in me thinks that a lot of the replicas will be made by the same company in Asia and then simply badged for the retailer so a £40 will be exactly the same as a £20. Also can you be sure genuine aren't exactly the same ?

Yes, my genuine ones were still working after 18 years, heavier build.

I wonder if the issue isn't in the rest of the linkages / mechanism, causing extra stain on the handle, rather than the handle itself?

Possibly not helped, just fitted a new lock mechanism.

Yes, though its mainly cheap plastic, I did keep it in use by bodges with a soldering iron and glue gun, looked out the receipt, paid £33 for the pair, what should I have expected!
I have too much on just now to waste time on it, and fed up stripping doors to bodge it.

I've replaced the drivers door on my 110 a few years ago with a £20 one and it's been holding up fine. Even briefly taking a chunk of the 110's weight as it lent over at Seven Sisters and then got hit by a tree as we drove past it.

Mine you only replaced it because the ferrule started spinning so couldn't refix it to the new door.

Should clarify I only replaced the original handle from 1994 because the ferrule was spinning so the new one is the £20 replacement.

In seriousness, with your skills and equipment @Rannsachair you should
design your own mechanisms to go on the back of the aftermarket handles.

I went for the easy option as fed up climbing over the cubby box to get in and out the passenger door, got oem spec handles for half the price of LR branded box ones from Malting's 4x4. Concluded my latch/lock mechanism has been partially seized for some years, night and day improvement and door closes easier.

Decided to splash out and do the passenger side too.
