Dell Latitude D620 laptop

I'm sure someone on here will know the answer to this on here, but I removed the battery on this laptop to check details so I could order the correct one [got one on order from Amazon - should be here tomorrow].

However I noticed this connector under the battery which looks like it would accept a SIM card? What good would that be?

Also having problems getting Internet Explorer to connect to any website, whether connected to the modem be cable or wirelessly. Keeps saying it cannot go to the chosen website because there is a problem with its Security Certificate. I'd aim to use Google as my default browser as I use it on the desktop and tablet where it works well. Laptop is running MS Vista pro which I'm hoping to keep as I think it'll connect to my Epson 2450 scanner which won't work on Win7 but does on another old laptop running XP. Any thoughts on how to fix this, please?

Your internet explorer is too old to connect to modern interweb sites, you need to install a more modern browser - probably download the installer on another machine and copy over via network/usb. Not sure I like the idea of still running vista though...

Would I be better reverting/installing XP instead - I'm sure I have a CD with the programme and key somewhere. Might just try plugging in the scanner to see if Vista'll allow me access.....

The laptop would prob just be used for that, then I can ditch the even older machine which has a dodgy power connector which can only sometimes recharge the failing battery in there, or can be iffy if relying on it while scanning......

Agree with above about Microsoft Explorer - even Microsoft have disowned it now.

There are as many views on alternate browsers as there are on anything else, however any you have heard of (and install on Vista) would be perfectly fine. The most mainstream are probably Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.

My problem is the l/top was a freebie with only BMW diagnostic software installed along Vista as the op system. Never needed to connect to the interweb and BMW sold so uninstalled it. I realise it's out of date tech-wise so I'll probably just forget the web and use it for scanner access (I have another l/top and a tablet in addition to the desktop. Oh, and a smartphone which I find too fiddly to use for Internet use ).

Firefox is in use and used daily.
There is also an end of life version for Windows 7 users.

dont bother that support already ended on the other 2, only firefox on 7 will last until 2024

Digitizing slides

I know there a few photography enthusiasts on here, any recommendations for a scanner to digitize 35mm slides onto PC?, tried "top ten" & reviews, but best buys seem to be either no longer available or only for sale in the US :(

so using the dell as an offline machine is best practice

but i do agree with you that epson should have upgraded the drivers to work with windows 7 more so when when alot of companys refused vista and windows x64 the operating system before windows 7

I do know that on a Desktop PC, if the button battery goes flat or is removed the PC will not function because time/date is not correct. When I put a new button batt in it was fine.

Maybe it is the same with Laptops.

I suspect you may be right, but no, it was ok before with the old battery which I decided to replace because it would hold charged for any time. Button one must be OK because I managed to update date/time. New battery installed and currently charging so all seems fine.
