Devilbiss JGA 577

Hi All

I've been give a Devilbiss JGA 577 however I don't think it will be of any use to me but I thought I should check. I am in the middle doing a bare metal respray on my 1971 TR6 and intend to use Etch primer, high build primer and finish with Cellulose. I painted this car 11 years ago with an enamel and the prep could have been better, so I'm determined to take my time and get it right.

This gun I've aquired has a 1.8 cap, and if I remember right these JGA use a lot of air, probably more than my 3hp 50L compressor can manage.

Obviously this gun is no use for cellulose in this setup but would it be any good for primer, or is it worth spending money on.

I know Jaykay and Langy has one/several and I have one plus a copy, I love mine. Have several guns but none of them beat the feel of using a JGA. Compared to my Iwata HVLP gun it uses quite a bit less air but does put out more overspray.

Are you sure it's a JGA577 and not a JGA557? I'm thinking it's probably a 557......1.8 fluid tip might be a tad on the large side......but you'd get away with it!

I'm thinking your comp will be ok for what you want to do, might have to give it a breather now and again, if you were doing 2k with an airfed attached, you'd fail.....I guess give it a go, and see how you get on.

Have you got any photos of the TR6?? I'm a fellow TR man, right in the middle of TR5 restoration at the moment...all good fun!!

Yep got about 8 of them, but none of mine are JGA577 ???

Could be right, I was told it was a 577 but 557 seems more like it.Is it worth the cost aquiring a more suitable fluid tip etc or should I just us it as is for primer.

The photo is of the car two years ago on the Pyrenees. We drove down from Perthshire to Portsmouth, took the ferry to Bilbo then drove over the Pyrenees and back through France.Just over 2000 miles, great trip, car didn't miss a beat.

Yeah it'll be a 557, good guns.....I've had mine for 25+ years and it's still going strong!!
But I have to say, I also use the cheapy ebay touch up guns too, £10 a go, and got to say they're pretty good!!

But you should be ok with the 557.... I guess the ting to do is try it out with the setup it has now, and see how you go. It is a large fluid tip, but you can always back off the amount of material coming out with the gun controls.

Have a go is the best advice. can't see any photos????

I hunted around for cheap setups, new being pricey. Look up the part nos and watch ebay etc. I lucked out with some ex-MOD stuff very cheap found on the net.

Cheap mini's, agreed, got a couple of Bergen ones, really good and well under £20 delivered.

It should be marked on the gun JGA 5?7

Got to be honest i don't know for sure that's the reason, but i do know he was getting pee'd off a bit, we exchanged a few PM's, I felt the same....I'm back after a break!!

But yes a great loss, a wealth of knowledge, and always happy to help out.

Thats a shame about jaykay, nice bloke and he knew his stuff, a loss to the forum in my opinion.

Yeah you're not wrong there....I do find a lot of that on Youtube as well....I've been in body repair and paint since 1985, I'm no expert, but I've got enough experience to get the job done....but i'm always keen to find a better ways of doing things.....I get so many comments from people who have never lifted a tool in their life, telling me how to do it....mainly because they'd read it somewhere.....makes my blood boil!!!

The internet is a great tool, you can find out anything.....but it tends to make everyone an "Expert" with absolutely NO experience!!

I guess they call it "progress" lol

Unfortunately its a fact of life with forums these days that you will always get answers from someone that has googled something rather than actually having done it in real time

Thanks for all the comments lads, I will give it a go and see how I get on. It will be a while until I'm ready to spray,still removing paint, then some welding before filling and primer. Day off today so trying to build up the energy to get out and get started, but its bloody cold out there!!

at the end. Think it's one of the "share" options, been a long while since used PB.

No problem Cameron......that is the best bet, have a go when the time comes and see how you get on, there's a few very good experienced people here who are only to pleased to help out if you get stuck....Langy is the top man in my view, always listen to him....he knows!!!

Yeah not very nice working in the freezing cold, I'm lucky to have a good heater in my garage, so it's never painful!

As for your photos, copy the HTML code straight from photobucket, and just paste it in your comment, then it'll appear. Will look forward to having a look :-)

Yes thats a TR2, however not just any old TR2 that's TS2 the second tr ever made and it belongs to the TR Register, I just borrowed it for the day. I did own a 1954 Tr2 before the 6, great cars.
