Diesel Road Compressor

Im looking at doing some blasting a bit more professionally. Ive done a fair bit using a DIY pot but want to up my game a bit.

I know nothing about road compressors tbh. I could do with some schooling if anyone can help please?

I assume they only make air on demand rather than store it as well?

Can the output air pressure be adjusted down for other using other smaller tools or do they just make a set amount - or can I fit a regulator to adjust down?

What about breathing the air from an air fed mask and filtering out nasties?

Any better/worse makes to go for or just find the lowest hours ones possible?

Any other advice or pointers would be most helpful.

Mine was an old Atlas Copco.....with a Little 2 cylinder Fiat air cooled Diesel...the engine had been rebuilt on mine and was faultless in all the time I had it....
and it did loads of work.....mainly tractors and chassis for repaint.....so it would run for at least 4hrs at a time......
for me it was toooooo noisey for any other use....in fact mine had a 100m of high pressure hose 35mm dia....???? so if it was a long job I worked as far away from the blxxdy thing ad poss....
other thing to worry about is the exhaust, they can be a bit smelly when going up and down thru the revs.....
the only tank on mine would be about10ltrs......the comp, a rotary van type just delivered enough air without a tank.....
dont think there's a good makes really .....most spares are available......was told if the vane comp blows up it's a junker and not repairable.....

A guy that did my blasting had a much bigger compressor, he worked on the principle that with more air you can use less grit, make less mess and turn out the work faster.

There are screw, sliding vane, piston, and "1/2 engine" types.
Breathing air from any of them without the proper filter is bad.

Just make sure it's properly serviced and parts are available.

Screw comps are incredibly reliable with proper maintenance

Fwiw this is what a badly serviced compressor looks like




This is inside the reclaimer, it should be pretty clear oil, this had completely gunked up the air end, the motor stalled out before it could start it due to how clogged everything was.

We put varnasolve in to the oil few oil changes later the machine was clean.

140 cfm was back in the day, since the 1980's all you see are 185 cfm and up.
Ingersoll Rand with a JD diesel are very common, especially with the Amish.
185 will run a 5/16 nozzle.

They tend to rank road tow compressors by "tools" rather than actual output.
1 and 2 tool compressors are the common ones. 1 tool isn't enough. They had a 2 tool machine at work and bought a blasting kit for it. They did a land rover chassis then gave up as it wasn't enough. At some point they are going to have another go but with a 4 tool machine but these are less common and pretty big

Yep, it won't be cheap setting up with decent equipment. But if I can keep busy enough then itl pay for itself.

I do t know it's just a 2 tool compressor to most people I know. I think the same make as what you posted just older. They where looking at something like this to have another go

I think the compressor you have put in the link would run an 8 mm nozzle & your breathing gear, @brightspark should be able to confirm this. Other thing to look for is moisture separation, I am sure my compressor manufactures water as well as air.

i could run the airfed helmet of the mobile comp but need to cool the air to it so i run it of a seperate compressor and line nice and cool
