Diesel road compressor

Hi again
Posted here a few months ago about a vacublast cabinet and how to convert it to a pressure system...... well I got that bit sorted out thanks to some good spuds on this forum

Only now got around to getting a diesel 150cfm road compressor to run the bugger off

The compressor is second hand with 1600 hours on it, no smoke from a cold start, runs well with no excessive noise that I can tell of

Is there anything I really have to keep an eye on with this thing to keep it running well and healthy

Anybody know the service intervals for oil and filter changes e.t.c

This is totally new for me and don't want to see things go tits up cos I didn't service this or didn't keep an eye on that ........ oh yes, and there is always the grief to listen to from the other half :full

Generally service intervals for filters and oild is 100hrs. I change the oil in heavy use kit every 50 hrs to keep the unit runing smoothly! just remember to check the oil and water every time you use it. Is it a perkins power unit?

To be honest I didn't take much notice of make or model at the time of hearing it running

The guy had just serviced it and it is a lot tidier than the rest I have taken a look at

This compressor won't see any abuse as it will be sited in a dry shed and the heaviest work I will be doing would be alloy motorbike rims with glass bead prior to painting

supposed to get it Saturday so Ill post a pic and any more info I can find on it after that

its probably aircooled so just diesel and oil to check, we have one sittin waiting for connection to a large industrail gas cylinder, 3 or 4 foot in diameter and 6 foot long, hoping to run a 1inch airwrench off it.

Good point! If it is air cooled then make sure there is plenty of ventalation!

On the Air wrench front just make sure that the feed to the guin is of a sufficent diamiter for delivery or you won't get the full grunt!! Never tried having a cylinder on my compressor... it tends to travel behind the landy Let me know how you get on with it!

Slightly OT - If you're going to paint the rims I'd use grit rather than bead. Bead leaves a very smooth shiny finish whereas grit leaves a rough surface which gives a better key for paint.

Found out it is a Compair 150

It is water cooled and came from a hire firm

As I haven't had a chance to clear a space for it yet the guy said I could pick it up next week so no pics yet sorry

Any idea where to get a good deal on all filters for this thing ?

Is that a Deutz Engine on that, Air cooled. will have have KHD written on the plate if it is, filter housing to me looks deutz, Your lucky if it is there pretty forgiving on service intervals they were 600Hrs oil change.... Filter wise someones been using Baldwins on there which are pretty good, so give them an Email or Phone call to find out where your local dealer would be...

BTW Deutz Engines are some of the best in the world (German made), Very highly engineered, Far superior to water cooled, used extensively in construction, plant, Ag, and industry, They require less ventilation than a regular water cooled, have lower oil changes (due to the hotter running) and are more fuel efficient, take care not to let the rocker covers leek into the fin bay though, this makes them overheat, Its the only know issue they have.....

To back up Snowcat, the the two big round things above the red cylinder on the left have OBEN / TOP written on them. Oben is German for top...

Defo a deutz (3 Cylinder?) remove the cover held on by the 2 13mm headed bolts and replace the cloth braided fuel return pipe, be careful not to break the cross/tee pipe connectors cut pipe off with a Stanley knife.

Also check the timing belt if it should break it normally damages the push rods/rockers/possibly valves.

The main fuel filter cap/bracket is made out of plastic so don't tighten the filter to tight.

DEUTZ 1011 engine . Have the timing belt replaced regardless .Not a job to do if you have no deutz engine experience as special tools required and a workshop manual is over £100.Correct tension of the belt is important and requires a belt tension gauge deutz tool around £400 but a good quality one is around a £100 timing pegs £40 from deutz plus to remove one belt cover bolt you will need a five point torx bit.A good source of deutz parts at reasonable cost is Aktion Automotive in Cardiff on 029 20464668 .Timing belts should be changed on these engines every 3000 hours.As already mentioned in a past post also replace the fuel leak off pipes as these perish and when they go what a mess.

Engine is oil cooled so keep the oil cooler on the top of the engine clean and regularly check the fan belt.Fuel lift pumps can also be short lived on these engines

oben/top is there so that the dirt trap is at the bottom and when the suction is released as the engine stops the two flaps open and the dirt is released

Took off the plate to see the spill pipes and just as described the cloth covered pipes are weeping and looking the worse for wear

Had a wee hoke at the air filters

NICE

So its on the phone to order up a multitude of filters and whatever oil is required
Got to keep that one quiet from the wife.......... told her the compressor was dead on and didn't need anything ..... can you see my nose getting longer from there

Apart from the filter thats been ripped they dont look that bad.
Youd get the parts for it here Just call them, quote the number on the filters and you should get a reasonable price.

Try to buy the genuine Mann filters as the filter elements are similar to the ones used in the paving equipment I work on. Tried the rest and the fit and life of the Mann filters is superior.Only other comparable brand is Donaldson not sure if they make an equivalent element.Keep the compressor element changed on a two to one ratio as more volume of air is drawn through this.There may also be an oil seperator filter on the output side of the compressor and if you are getting excessive oil coming through your airlines then this will need to be replaced.It usually sits in a small upright air vessel.
