different painting technique

My friend uses satin/matt paint as a primer.

His method is to clean surrounding area, perform the welding, then while the area is still hot he whips the rattlecan of paint out and spray the area while it's still hot so it dries pretty damn quick.

His excuse for his method is that the paint is cheaper than primer and it works just as good.

I have compared the quality of the primer to the satin/matt and they both seem to attach themselve as good as each other.

Can anyone tell me if theres anything wrong with this method?

a few thoughts would be

the metal isnt clean straight after welding

the extreme heat may effect the paint/primer in some way

id suggest a ecth primer thats made for bare metal after some prep work ..it should stick to the metal better than painting directly

but if its working for you...carry on

I have noticed some types of paint are affected by heat - If you weld the black coated body panels and try to remove the paint afterwards with thinners the paint near the weld won't come off - maybe the same thing.

That's a different black paint though - decent panel suppliers use a phosphoric primer that etches into the metal. The rattle can stuff will just sit on top. I'd be inclined to remove it before painting and use self etch instead. Nothing worse than a poor bond between the paint and metal. Had that on my MGB front wings. Now I err on the side of caution and do things the normal way.
