Disconnecting the pump from the receiver to ceiling mount

I've got a 150L 3HP Sealey belt drive compressor and it's taking up valuable space in my workshop. The motor & pump are on a steel platform that unbolts from the bottle. So I thought that I could locate the bottle and motor/pump seperately to make better use of space.

I've read that people have used regular copper plumbing pipe. I was thinking of 22mm domestic pipe as the receiver would be 2m away from the pump.

Has anyone tried anything like this?

I've plumbed 15mm copper in to my receiver, I used a flexible section of hose (still rated to 15 bar, IIRC) to isolate the compressor vibrations from the copper.

15mm from the pump to the receiver? Is that enough for such a big pump? And what about the heat from the pump? Does it not damage the flexible hose?

15mm will be adequate but 22mm will give better heat disipation . if both tank and reciever are solidly mounted a flexible joint wont be needed

The delivery pipe on my 3hp compressor is 1/2 inch so 15mm should be fine, 22m would be better because you'd have more surface area to dissipate the heat.

You can get proper braided pipe to handle the heat.

I used ordinary Nylon air hose to connect to the pump on a compressor I was building and it softened and burst, so that would be no good.

He's mounting them seperately 2m apart and no doubt using anti-vibration mountings on the pump, so I would say a flexible pipe would be essential.

In my case, the compressor is still mounted to its own tank, it's that that's plumbed in with copper pipe, so the heat isn't an issue. The vibration is though.

It'd be interesting to know what the flexible hose is rated to, temperature wise. You could run a short length of pipe around the pump, mounted rigidly to it, before the flexible section if you decided its an issue.

When I burst the hose it was fastened to a union screwed straight into the cyclinder head (on that compressor we dug out of that skip!)

I now have a length of copper pipe (about 1.5.) from the pump to the union and it's been fine. It's in a serpentine form with a small fan for good measure.

What sort of ball valves are people using? Just regular domestic gas valves?

What fittings can I use to adapt from the compressor receiver to domestic pipe?

The firm in that link I posted does all the bits you need, they also publish a thread size chart on their website.

In the picture above I used a 15mm compression coupling from Screwfix, it has a 1/2 in BSP thread so it just screwed into the hole in the cylinder head. IIRC 22mm couplings have a 3/4 BSP thread.

1/2BSP is just under 21mm OD, it's something like .825" diam and it's 14tpi.

Don't use the Push on fittings. I had the pump to receiver pipe (Steel tube) blow on mine a while back, used a flexible tap connector I had to hand, problem was the plastic coupling at the end melted from the heat.
