Discovery 2 hub puller

Typically with days to go before showing the landy at the local beer, erm steam rally, the left front hub decided its bearings would collapse, to be fair, its the original hub and abs sensor so its done its job. The only problem arose when trying to remove the hub from the driveshaft. I knew it was going to be tight, and didnt have a puller. Tried a tap with the hammer and no chance, so soak with penetrating fluid and off to the local garage to get it on the press. “Never done one of them, dont have a puller (translation, I do have a puller but know what a pig they are), take it to heath (local landrover bloke). “ Heath was on holiday

Gaztube was suggesting a gear puller, so ordered one from screwfix, took one look at it, and decided the black cast monkey metal was going to snap like a carrot, which it did. Eventually got it off by braying it out with the hub nut on and a bfh, but it was touch and go whether i had damaged the threads .

So the other side is due for doing. Has anyone had success with the sealey universal hub pullers, are they universal (except a disco) ?

Or do I fab one up. I have a brake caliper winding tool, Im thinking 3 angle uprights held on by the wheel nuts, welded to a top plate which will take the caliper winding tool.

Or has anyone a better design

I’d take that sensor out before you bust it.

Fab one up. Piece of heavy plate drilled in 3 or 4 places to accept the studs and drilled again in the centre. Weld a big nut on like M20 or something and then use a pointed m20 bolt to push the shaft out.

You may have to knock the studs out so as you can use bolts.

If you have a scrap steel rim weld the plate on the middle of that. Only got to drill one hole that way.

Personally I’d try and find someone else with a press

The sensors knackered anyway and Id bought a hub with sensor. I did take the sensor out to see if it could be salvaged but the reluctor rings ground the end off it. Thanks

Lol no worries. Forgot to do it and ******** them myself

Reckon a press would be my first choice if I could find one. Must be somewhere with one near you?

Ps don’t look at the welding should have tigged it really but its been the best part of a good few years since any of the welders were out, the later underneath welds were better

as long as it worked , who cares about the welding , the jobs a good un.
