Disposing of a disabled lift

Lots of websites show organisations happy to accept disabled equipment. Until you ring them and say you have one.
Happy for it to go FOC.

Any ideas? FB Marketplace has had a few bites but nothing firm.

I would if I were you.

The problem is that for insurance reasons no commercial installer would risk fitting a second hand item - and be left liable for it as if it were new.
Unlike a stairlift that doesn't lend itself to fitting by a competent handyman in an afternoon either.

I have earmarked a ground floor cloakroom and section of first floor landing for future fitment of just such a beast - well into 5 figures fitted though.

ETA: for my curiosity only could you post a photograph of the first floor when the lift is on the ground floor? I have some difficulty explaining to my wife how one might fit and how it might look.

If you are going to list possible repurposing then just use it as is for access to mezzanine storage?

id use it more as a lift for a few bits of gear more than access wheel a trolley on and send it up

I have a friend who fit these as a living(his own business)
I could ask him if you like, he might even buy it of you.
I used to be a stair lift engineer years ago thats how I know him.

We couldn't give a stairlift away once it was no longer needed. Perfectly useable tidy machine. Easy to fit. Ran off a 13amp plug. Eventually someone took it but given the new cost i was surprised how hard we struggled to give it away.

I paid for one to be fitted at my Nans house when she was in hospital - for her return home - she used it for three days.

She passed away peacefully in her sleep - in her own bed. So money well spent.


I could not give the thing away when we cleared the house - I unscrewed it and cut it up with 9" for the scrap bin in the end.

They haven't even taken the power supply from the adjacent overheads with a pair of crock clips. proper job!

I have fitted 3 stairlifts. (Actually one twice as I gave it away inc fitting)..piece of cake just needed to remove screws and replace them in the new place.

I was wary at first but keeping it in one piece was a godsend.

I don't think it would do my landrover but someone with a motorcycle might like to be able to easily work at eye level?

(I know nothing about motorcycle maintenance btw)

Have you contacted SCOPE, or MsF, (Doctors without Borders), both seem to search donated mobility aids, don't know if they'd be interested in a lift, just a thought.

Biggest problem is getting a disabled person who needs one to have access to suitable transport and someone prepared to fit it.

I think the biggest part of the cost is the installation, which is often bespoke. Then of course is the demounting and re-install, a lot of labour.

They even charge to remove a stair-lift - then sell it on for a very good mark-up. I fitted a stairlift in my house - total cost about £150 (included two trips to Bradford for collection - as I thought the rack would have been in two pieces). Local supply of a secondhand lift for a straight, standard stair varied between 500-1500 quid (minimum for the estimated cost, of course).

I have a mate in the industry, biggest problem with these types of lift is that they are built to the installation spec and can be difficult to change.
