Dividers question

Does anybody know where I can purchase a large pair of dividers that take engineers chalk? Mine have gone awol and they dont seem to exist on tweb, dont want the ebay versions that take blackboard chalk, I want the ones that take the flat engineers chalk sticks.

Sounds like you want an old blackboard compass (rather than divider) if you want chalk in one leg..?

Googling for 'blackboard compass' throws up a few options.

Edit: just noticed the flats chalk caveat...

If I have to I will seek out some rectangular tube with an external dimension of 16mmx12mmx2mm wall (if it exists), that would make the perfect size holding sheath for the chalk and would take a thumb screw, it would also leave enough room for a slither of steel to stop the thumb screw cutting the soapstick in half. That could then be attached to the end of some standard steel dividers. Anyone know if such a size extrusion exists?

In the death Pete thats what I will do, should be able to find a bit of rectangular box that size either in ali or steel.

I have those, great for the intended use but the chalk flops about in them like a cock in a sock. A better brand version with a locking screw would do the job but its only that cheap tosh that seems to be available.

The Zoro ones are worth looking at, as suggested above. This one shows a little more clearly the soapstone-holding set-up:

It would work with only 3 and two-halves sides of the rectangle. The bit you cannot see does not need to be joined together across the back of the stick of chalk, just have two wings that nearly touch. The screw presses on the leg of the divider so there is no chance of breakage.

If I were to make one, I'd make something with the same dimensions as the soapstone stick out out steel, heat up my sheet and fold it around the dummy chalk stick.

Makes sense. If someone patented it as an ”Arc Marker” the market would soon be inundated with “Orc Markers” , knowing the Chinese propensity to copy things

Do both parents have to screw them before use?

As a schoolboy I worked Saturdays in a toy shop. Just as the Chinese stuff started to get into the market. There was a baby’s toy for the bath with three ducks that swam in the bath. Actually very well made. Anyway, the Chinglish instructions were hysterical. One bit being about assembly… Yep, you guessed it both parents had to screw all the ducks before having a bath . Shop owner never figured out why they never sold…. Might have had something to do with the price tag we put on it , as it was a constant source of laughs
