DIY dust extractor

been toying with an idea for a dust extractor using the extraction fan from an old paint booth, blades are big and chunky it runs at a very reasonably noise level and the fan located outside ( i have 3 phase in the unit for my booth etc)

would it generate enough suction by building a sealed box in in fan intake and tapering it down to say 3inches and jsut mating a large dust extraction bag to the rear of the fan exit (much like the woodworking dust extractors with the woolen bag up top and the plastic bag on bottom to catch them?)

starting to get fed up with filler and dust from the DA sanders now and i really need to keep my workspace clean lol (and im poor so cannot afford to blow 300-900 on a decent one lol)

anyone made one like this?

it wont be any use u need a centrifugal fan simlar to woodchip fan for moving materials and dust . an axial fan of a spray booth just moves air and cant be restricted

What rough size are the extraction outlets on the handtools? A bog standard cylinder vacuum, (Henry type thing), can be quite good, especially if the hose and couplings are upped a tad in bore size, or you can get workshop ones which cost more but which are already set for the purpose with larger diameter hoses etc.

Yep, we used one as the extractor on a dye penetrant line powderstorm cabinet; it had HEPA filters, a 3kW motor and cost about a grand!

no thats about the going rate for any half decent industrial vacuum, the mirka automated hoover ones are circa £500 for a cheap one and run upwards of 1200 for the decent ones. they are also hella noisey hence why i was toying with the idea of building one from a fan, or find a cheap secondhand woodshop one locally but they still command good money its costs next to naff all to run my booth extraction fans (they are .18kw each on 3ph) i ran them for a full day and it cost me about £1.50 in the units it used (just wish my 10kw compressor was that cheap to run)
