DIY Head Gasket Snap-on HP12 Compressor

Hi;

I bought a second hand compressor a year or so ago and repaired the head gasket on the Air Pump. Looks like its gone again (Not done too bad I suppose).

Anyway, can anyone give me any tips on what materiel to use this time to make a new gasket? Last time I managed to blag an off cut from an Engineering Shop, but there any commonly available materiels that I could use?

Gasket paper isn't expensive but in a pinch a cornflakes box can be used.

As well as the above you could try copper from a hot water tank. Cut out the shape, clean off the coating, anneal it and fit. Firstly, though, make sure the cylinder and head are flat - whatever material you use for a gasket.

Thanks fellas, I asked this question a long while ago and just found the thread where I repaired it the first time. I took the head off and low and behold the gasket I made is perfectly OK its the lower gasket that sits between the pistons and the Reed Plate, this looks to be the original factory fitted one.

I have done a temp repair with some Aero Grade Hylomar but will whip the Gasket off in due course and make a new one Cornflakes for breakfast tomorrow then :-)

Thick gasket paper is what I would use and make one myself.

Klinger C4400 or C4324.

Never had any luck with ordinary cardboard, as graffian etc say gasket paper isn't expensive and works properly.

I also used Klingersil C4324 as Graffian suggests on my Clarke SE16C. Used gasket paper as a temporary fix but it could not take the heat and was showing signs of disintegrating when replaced.

On my first mini the thermostat housing gasket kept failing because the seat was badly corroded so I made a gasket out of an offcut of lead flashing. I came across the car about 15 years later and the lead gasket was still on there!
