I was welding up my gas bottle chimnea at the weekend and thought i had the settings wrong on the helmet as i was struggling to see what i was doing and the weld looked really bright. I stopped and had a fiddle with the helmet and found it wasnt reacting properly. Should they wear out? I thought it would be something that would just keep working?

They need batteries or they would not power up quick enough. Your could do with replacing them. There are two types. Normal and rechargeable.

I have had two helmets "die" from not being used enough. Manufacturer says battery goes dead. Tried the day in the sun but no joy.
I've replaced them with a helmet with a replaceable battery. I guess if you're welding frequently they are getting charged often.

That's why I went for a Draper 08166 helmet as it was the only one I could find that took 2 x AAA batteries. I specifically wanted replaceable batteries as sometimes the helmet sits in its box unused for a year. I've owned this helmet for about 5 years and it still works fine (last used a fortnight ago). Whenever storing the helmet I always remove the batteries first.
I'm not saying it's the greatest helmet or anything but I'm pleased with it, it does the job well and I find the fact it takes 2 x AAA batteries a real plus (even if the wife doesn't agree when I steal the batteries from the phones in the house).

Is this stuff from Hong Kong any good or cheap rubbish? I dont want to scrimp on something that looks after my eyes, but it seems a shame to chuck my helmet away if i can 'recycle' it by just replacing the cartridge. (having said that, postage times are ridiculously long on that item)

The solar ones still have battery's but they are recharged by the solor panel. They are replaceable but it's a hell of a task getting inside those sealed cartridges and often the battery's are stuck in tight with all manner of gunk. They don't like been sat in a bag or locker for weeks. Pauls advise is the one to try first. Stick it out in the sun (if your getting any) for a day to try liven up the battery's then make it a habit of either using it more or not storing it in a dark place for ages.
Buying an adf for £7 is proper skimping. If you can't save the lid throw it away and treat yourself to a new one. You don't need to spend a lot to get something good.

I had an esab eye-tech that died after about 10+ years,
it had plenty of use as a few of those years were as a full time welder so i had value for money,
as said it seamed like a massive job to into the sealed cassette to change the battery so i simply gave the helmet to a mate for spare parts.

Hi Guys
I'm Relatively new to welding and i am currently doing my apprenticeship for Tig Welding, I need some help figuring out why my welding helmet i received as a gift is not darkening properly, its a Disston YC-06 Auto Darkening Helmet.
It darkens perfectly when i start the weld but as soon as i move into a corner it starts flickering and sometimes stops all together, is this helmet suitable for Tig welding or is my sensor maybe not strong enough, should i resume using my older helmet for the Tig welding?

My auto darkening did not kick in after a winter in the shed so I left it out in the sun and it seemed OK - ish, but not as responsive as when new. I split the module casing apart gently and there are 2 CR2032 cells soldered into the PCB. A check with a 3V LED confirmed both cells are dead so I soldered wires onto 2 new cells and then fitted them to the PCB. Works well now.
