My dog has just one trait, she empties the contents of some of our bins, these are two small ones, she’s fed once in the morning of the correct ration.
Is there a scent I can smear on the bin to deter her, tried deodorant,no success?
we had a foster dog in care that did the same.....
I put heavy duty elastic luggage hooks thru the handles, old fashioned metal dust bins.....
she just gave up, by the end of the 3 months we kept her she quit doing bin raids.......
I had a Beagle many years ago, loved a dustbin. Really, really annoying. In the end what I did was tie a fishing line to the bin lid from an upstairs window and when he went close, give it a yank, this worked, to a point. A couple of weeks of this he wouldn't go near a bin, but he used to hate bin days when they were all out at the kerb. I didn't see that coming.
To a food motivated dog, that trimming of bin ripened meat or whatever, smells irresistible. Especially when compared to the brown monotony she has day in, day out! The bin is neither a barrier to the smell for her nor a challenge to empty.
I'd approach from two fronts, be meticulous about bin etiquette, any food waste, put into a separate small bin that's kept in a cupboard. Maybe the same cupboard as the the dog biscuits. Most dogs can be fed some scraps that aren't bad for dogs too, might help to feed stuff instead of letting it fester in a bin.
Then, secure the bin lid for a while. If there's no motivating tasty smells and no way to get in, it should help.
