Thats really handy, I made something similar a few years ago. But as with mine that top drawer WILL drive you mad. Every time you want to open it that bloody vice handle will ALWAYS be vertical especially when summats clamped in it so you can't open the drawer to get at a tool to use on the bit you got clamped in the vice!
My offcuts would not amount to a 1/10 scale model.
I have noticed that problem indeed already, anyone ever thought of putting a hand wheel on a vice instead of the t handle?
Yup. I'm going to try out some other possibilities when I have chance, but the D shackle is one I like. Handwheels look a bit weird on vices. I've seen one or two and it honestly put me off that idea. The shackle required no modification to the vice though, so it's readily revertible to original form. Plus, you can slip a rod through it if you need a bit of extra grunt.
A mobile multi purpose storage utility thingy will soon be full of bits and bobs
Suppose a hand wheel would be ok if using a lot of the vices opening/closing capacity often, but it may also be an obstruction.
If the vice handle is vertical just slide it upwards to open the draw?????
That's what I was thinking with a handwheel. For spinning it open & closed, (I rarely tend to clamp owt overly tight either, so don't generally need tightening grunt), they do seem the perfect option. They just look so damned weird when you actually see one fitted though. Came across a photo of a old American vice which had them fitted as standard, and it really did look strange, even by my standards. The D shackle doesn't look too out of place though, (it obviously does look a bit unusual as we're brought up seeing standard vice handles), provided you size it right for the vice. My first one was a size too large and it just looked a bit daft. The second choice needed some filing out on the rings to make it a good fit, but it was sized better for the vice. They are quite easy to use for wheeling the screw quickly too, similar to a handwheel, if the vice doesn't have an overly tight movement. Stick your finger in the shackle and you can spin it merrily.
As much as it goes against the standard we're all used to regarding handles, I do actually like the first one I did, so I collar any shackles I come across now, just incase. The first one I altered likely won't be the last one fitted with that type of handle. This is the one which suffered the fate.

Stick a coule of cable ties on the handle, one each side of the centre to hold it in the upward position by slipping the cable tie along the handle.

That reminds me of a sow with a nose ring!
