Drill adaptor

Hi All
Any body know of the angle that's on the morse taper bits.
I want to make up an adaptor to go into mt4 drill.

My book does not give angles. It is all in taper per foot or inch. As a rule about 5/8" per foot.

No4: .62326 inch taper per ft.

Any more info, just ask.

Tips for ordering drill chuck arbors:
Most often, a drill chuck arbor has a longer end that is either a straight shank or a male Morse Taper to fit into a drill press. The other, shorter end of the arbor is a male Jacobs taper to fit into a drill chuck. If a drill press has a non-removable male spindle, the taper is usually 33 Jacobs Taper.

You can buy blank morse tapers, dunno how common they are in mt4 but upto mt3 are easy to find and can be sleeved to get mt4. Assuming there's enough 'meat' for the job at hand it's cheaper than making 'em

Easier too, coz getting that angle exactly right is hard work.

The angles vary minutely due to tolerances of the originals, but essentially they are very close to 3 degrees taper.

Below are pictures of the morse taper page in the zues book and the fowlers machinists pocketbook. As mentioned above Neither give an angle but taper per foot or per inch. Some simple trig will give you the angle.

Will it be possible to get a good enough location to withstand the amount of torque you want to put through it. Proper taper shanks and adapters and on chucks ect are precision ground and rely on a good surface finish to have maximum contact area. You shouldn't be relying on the tang to take the torque, That's merely for location.

Really, if you're making your own knowing the taper angle is pretty much useless unless you happen to have a CNC machine, because no manual lathe has an accurate enough scale to set that angle. Taper per foot can be set with a sine bar, or a centre-drilled morse taper can be set between centres in the lathe and the angle set by mounting a DTI on the compound and adjusting the angle so that the dial shows no deflection when winding the compound in and out to run the DTI along the taper.

my vote goes to the dti method. use it in work to replicate parts that we haven't got drawings for

Will have a go and if it don.t work i.ll get a guy with a cnc to do them.
