drill and grinder stand

got to try out my new mig by making up some quick stands for bench drill and grinder.there only cheap tools and my skills are amateur,but it kept me busy for a bit and freed up some of my very limited bench space.steel cost 5 euro.
they cant be fixed to the floor as its a really old block floor which might be reconditioned in the future

They look like they should do the job. If you want a bit of weight for stability on the bases, shorten the column a bit and bolt the bases to some concrete blocks, (with rubber sheet or something on the underside of the blocks, to save gouging those floor tiles if you shimmy them around).

Good solid stands, you could always run a wall retaining bracket if you don't want to fix to the floor, it would increase stability a fair bit.

Some of the long welds on the drill base would have been fine stitch welded, not a criticism at all, just an opportunity to save gas and wire...or perhaps I am tight fisted

the drill is surprisingly stable,takes a fair bit of abuse to budge it,mainly because the force applied is downwards.

the grinder youre pushing away from you though,so you can see in the pic ive attatched an L shaped bracket to step on,to counteract that.it would be a lot better secured to the stud behind it alright,which would still leave it sort of portable

never thought of stitch welding the base,but every inch of weld is practice to me still,so theres no such thing as 'too much weld' yet....


i do have roofers felt,5mm stuff that i can burn on to the bases to prevent floor gouging

Nice stands! I have what looks like the same bench drill, Aldi/Lidl? If so, I found that the column is very slightly smaller than galvanized scaffold pole... Once you pickle the zinc off, very very slightly smaller, I improvised a bit ( spun the pole on rollers, flap wheel in angle grinder) and suddenly had a 5-foot (1500mm) column and a lot more room between table and chuck. Enough room to lose a couple of inches to a keyless chuck, a major improvement that speeded up drilling quite a bit! The original chuck is on a B16 taper, so cheap far eastern chucks can be had for it...

When I get a chance I might remake the pole/column on the lathe, though it's longer than the lathe bed - some though and a fixed steady required...

they were gas migged.
The drill itself was terrible,massive play in the column.somebody offered me silly money for it on the stand,so its gone now.the grinder was better though,just lacked power

Sounds like you got a duffer! Mine is ok, not top quality, but what did I expect for thirty quid! Definitely a bit better than a hand-held black n decker and anything that needs to be accurate gets drilled on t'lathe...
Rather than sloppiness, I found the short chuck to table gap was the problem, so my bodge made it a lot more useful - YMMV, of course!

We used to make grinder stand using an old car wheel and tyre, plenty of weight to give a stable base.
