Drill Press Motor Wiring Help Please

I'm after a little help with properly wiring in a different motor to my drill press. I've gone from 3phase to single (which I think it was originally).

I've got a 1/4hp Hoover Mk4 1425rpm continuous rated motor, which at the moment just has a length of flex and a plug coming out of it.

I've also got this switch, which looks like it was fitted from manufacture to the drill. It's On/Off/Reverse.

It has terminals marked A, B, C and 1, 2, 3.

I'd also quite like some sort of on/off/kill switch box. Are these known as Direct Online Starters or is this something else? This isn't essential, but it seems like a sensible idea.

Would very much appreciate your help with this one.

Direct line starter is the thing you need or for a little motor there often sold as NVR switches (no volt release) that switch is your photo is most likely a 3ph reversing switch and the 250v is referring to a single contact rating

Can you get a photo of what's underneath the plate (if there is one) where the cable goes into the motor. Also look for a wiring diagram on the underside of the plate.

The motor may not be reversible.

If you can get a no-volt release (NVR) switch with a big "stop" button that will act as a kill switch and protect you in the event of mains failure.

Thanks guys. I'll have a look tomorrow at the motor wiring and pop a photo up. How can I tell if the motor is reversible or not? If it is I guess I'll need a different switch to reverse it?

Will try and track down a NVR switch for sensible money.

Cool, I've got a couple on my watch list. Can you get some sort of generic box for these things?

Erm, I don't know really. I guess I don't.

Yep about£3 from any electrical wholesaler or tool station, screw fix and the like. Best to get one slightly to big as the number of times I have order a box and then found it don't fit in.....

Right then, Went over to the workshop and had a look at what I've got. So the motor wiring looks like this:

There was no wiring diagram on the motor, but to be honest, they're aren't that many options :incheek:

However, I have this DOL Starter, that I thought would only work for three phase, but look at the pics below and see what you think:

It also had this isolator, but I think that's going to be surplus to requirements.

So will this DOL work? It looks to have an overload protector, is this the right rating as the motor say 2amp on it.

The starter you have is most likely 415V coil. The fuse switch you have would be fine though but be aware there might be aspesdose is in ( Wish I could spell)

Not to worry about reversing the motor, I can get by with just forward.

Is that starter thing not likely to be of any use though or am I really better off just going and getting a little NVR switch. I'd rather only spend out if I need to.

The starter unit could be used if the coil is correct voltage but it's a bit involving to wire so for a fast easy job get a NVR

Soooo. The motor turns the wrong way...............

So I opened it up and this is what its got inside:

The green goes to terminal 4, with the black one and has the live feed,

The white wiregoes to T3 and is the neutral feed.

Red wire you can see.

Earth to casing.

So how do I swap the direction?

That forked device looks like the centrifugal switch that cuts the start winding out when the motor gets up to speed.

If you can trace its wires you should be able to locate the start winding. You will need to reverse the connections to this winding.

Right, It looks like the black and white wire go to the outer, larger coil, made from thicker wire. I presume that this is the main winding? There is continuity between these two

The Green and Red wires go to a smaller inner coil made from thinner wire, I presume this is the start winding?. The red one goes to the centrifugal switch. There is continuity between these two.

I can't move the red wire, so do I just swap the green one from terminal 4 (live) to terminal 3 (neutral)?
