Drill rack

Some of you may have seen similar things, I normally see them made out of wood. I was going to do that but I burnt the left overs I had for some reason. Anyway, I decided to make it out of steel that I had. 3mm steel left over from my bench

started by working out a rough size that would fit all my drill. Then plasma cut it out. Filed and ground it to size.

Then cut out the top part. I made sure to keep cut the sizes so they can accommodate the chargers. As can be seen further on.

My tig welding is going a bit backwards but it’s super hard with no seat.

First of the chargers. I wanted to make them so the wall retains them in place. I didn’t want to start fixing things permantly.

Start of the second charger. At this point I realised the two little tabs (on the bottom of the charger retaining plate) couldn’t both stays it was impossible to get the charger in the gab. I Cut one off and welded it on

The four retaining plates for inside corners. I used an old 1mm disk for the radius and plasma cut them, then ground smooth and drilled the holes.

I was hoping the drill holding part itself was strong enough to hold them all but it’s not, it sags a tiny bit. I will be adding a shelf across the middle for extra support and also drill bit storage. I’ll then add some little structural uprights connecting the (soon to be) three horizontal pieces together hopefully stopping the bottom part sagging.

It came out well. Some people may think I’m wasting my time but with limited space it’s nice to keep my bench as clear as possible.

You could 3d print some battery holders now and fix them inside the top of the enclosure

Or some sort of drill bit holders to store the bits like a wine rack if that makes sense.

i was going to use it as drill bit storage. I have a draw in my toolbox with three or four boxes.
Currently I only have one spare battery. I thought about printing some, my brother has a printer just I’ve never used it and not really sure what to do. Also I have a MacBook and I don’t know if it’s compatible. Probably easier for me to either buy or throw together something out of steel. I’ve had an idea about that as well .

That’s a very smart rack,well done.

And as Cianh91 says, it’s not time wasting if it neatens you up. You’ll actually be more efficient knowing everything has a place and everything is in its place.

The problem I have is when you forget where that place is and you have put all you have in that place..

Ive just done it with everything in my van

I thought I was crazy for thinking welding standing up is like taking a breath when aiming while shooting. On the two really long welds i was in a mid squat with my arm twisted around. So awkward.

That is true. I’m a bit of a clean freak. I’ve been doing the same with my van as well.

I bought a high bar stool on a gas strut & a padded seat & it's great for welding at the bench, especially tig. The gas strut means you have infinite height adjustment.

All finished now. No more sagging. Looks great. I think I’ll paint it at a later stage. I may make a lock mechanism as well maybe.
