This is my version of something I saw on youtube:
I can sort of sharpen drills by hand but they never quite feel right and I never get those nice long spirals of razor sharp swarf that slash your wrists so I have always known I am useless at it and not getting the best out of my drills.
So some scrap timber an hour of fun and a bit of setting up, the angle on the bit that slides right to left is 59 degrees, it puts a perfect first finish on the drill face, all that is required then is to put a touch of relief on the back edge to prevent drag.
After a couple of plays I did a damaged 12mm that would not drill at all and ran it through some heavy angle without a pilot hole and the result was fantastic, easy and two long spirals of swarf.
To be clear, this will not give you perfection but if you are like me it will give you sharp drills that cut a lot easier.
