Drilling rods help

Would anyone know the metal grade or specifications used for Drilling rods


they are used in Geological Surveys and Ground Investigation work I have a good supply of old ones if they are any use. I did turn an offcut earlier and it seams to turn well.


Because of what they were used for I reckon they must be pretty hard I am hoping to use the hammer parts



(end pieces) to turn some dies for my bead roller. The long drill rods I can clear 40mm diameter, so should be useful if a good grade of metal.

I make them and use en19t as to supplied specs

En19t is good and strong but still easily and reliably weldable unlike en24

Those small rods are for window sampling (window bangers) 4” bore 10m deep in soft material
For a bore hole auger or cable percussive 6-12” bore to 100m plus deep depending on operator skill and machine size
After that big auger or sonic rigs

I can’t tell you anything about the steel but the the smaller rods with the 100mm graduations are dynamic probe rods which are used for strength/density profiling soils using a window/windowless sampling rig. They are threaded on both ends and use a collar to join the rods. You use difference size fixed or disposable tips depending on which type of probing you are doing.

If the wider rod is a meter long they it will be a drill rod for the same type of rig and used to drive a hollow steel barrels for soil sampling. Looks to be the older 1 1/2 BSW thread also used on cable rigs as SPT rods. If it’s longer than a meter then it’s for cable drilling.

Heres a small window sampling rig Ive just rebuilt a engine on and the other picture is of casings I occasionally make and rethread if client is short of time. Main manufacturer has oil county lathe whereas I have to mess about

Dando Terriers are good rigs. We used Archway Competitors and then the Competitor Darts for years before swapping to Terriers. Meant shaving a chunk out of the other gear we could carry though to accommodate the heavier rigs.

na all got mainly thread damage they were getting scrapped till I chirped up the hammer end have split at the the thread end luckily for me.
