Drummond Round Bed Lathe #2

This is the second of the Drummond round bed lathes I recently acquired:



It has been quite heavily modified:-

1) Back gear fitted
2) MT2 spindle taper and hollow spindle
3) Spindle attachment for change wheels changed.
4) 6 inch chuck fitted
5) Non standard Cross-slide

This is the modified change wheel fitting:



The damage was already done by someone trying to remove a screwed collar by cutting through it with a hacksaw. The first job will be to make a new change wheel adapter.

it's nice to see the old'uns getting another life.......
there are a few old lathe's near me, not cheap tho........but not enough time.......is there ever.....?

Here is the new change wheel adapter, it actually took me a full day to make this, with only one disaster where I mashed a thread and had to re-design on the hoof!



These are the basic bits, a locking collar was added later:-



L-R, M8 socket head machine screw, washer, change wheel, retainer and shaft.

The retainer was made from a solid piece of 40mm dia round bar, drilled, bored and internally threaded:



You can just see the pin protruding from the retainer, this engages with the hole in the gear. I originally intended to have the pin in the gear engage with a hole in the retainer, but it fouled the end of the spindle.

This is a locknut to lock against the retainer. The retainer will rend to unscrew as the spindle rotates and I didn't really want to fit a grub screw due to risk of damaging the thread.

Just as well that I had the other round bed Drummond or I wouldn't have been able to make this. If I didn't have this lathe, I wouldn't have needed to!

So essentially the problem was both caused and solved by having 2 lathes?

The Drummond M has a lock ring on the left side of the spindle which is similarly threaded and is itself locked by a grub screw, the grub screw bites onto a small brass slug to prevent damage to the threaded spindle.

Which only goes to show you can't have too many lathes.

This is a handle for turning the spindle when screwcutting, it uses the bicycle pedal that didn't get used for the same purpose on Round Bed #1.

I had to make a spacer to replace the washer on the end of the spindle so that the handle cleared the end of the lead screw.
