Dry Ice Blasting...

Hi everyone. I am an engineering student. I read something called dry ice blasting and hazardous waste disposal while browsing net. Well I don’t know why, but I am curious to know about it. I know about traditional labor intensive methods like scrapers, wire brushes, sand blasting and pressure washing. I know dry ice is basically solid form of CO2, but I have no clue about this dry ice blasting and industrial cleaning .
Can somebody throw some light on this or at least suggest some site where I can find some info on this.

Looks quite fun, and apparantly very good for removing chewing gum from pavements. There's a wiki snippet with the basics:

One of the largest alternative uses of dry ice is blast cleaning. Dry ice pellets are shot out of a nozzle with compressed air. This can remove residues from industrial equipment. Examples of materials being removed include ink, glue, oil, paint, mold and rubber. Dry ice blasting can replace sandblasting, steam blasting, water blasting or solvent blasting. The primary environmental effect of dry ice blasting is the sublimed CO2. As the source of dry ice is typically pre-existing CO2, the net CO2 release derives only from the energy expended to compress the gas to liquid.
Dry ice blasting involves three factors:

1. kinetic energy
2. thermal shock
3. thermal kinetic energy

The kinetic energy of the dry ice pellets is transferred when it hits the surface, directly dislodging residues as in other blasting methods. The thermal shock effect occurs when the cold dry ice hits a much warmer surface and rapid sublimation occurs. The thermal kinetic effect is the result of the rapid sublimation of the dry ice hitting the surface. These factors combined cause small "micro-explosions" of gaseous carbon dioxide where each pellet impacts, dislodging the residue.

Actually gritblasting is a recognised way of cleaning skillets once they have become too encrusted with carbon.

I used to be a chef & we had a row of grills that used large heavy ribbed cast plates for doing steaks on. We used to scrape / wire brush them down each shift after over heating them to loosen the crud. Once that was inifective they were sent away for blasting.

It appears that shortly after john111's post appears a reply from matteww77 appears. This latter post contains a link which is an advert for a firm that does dry-ice blasting.

It's a very subtle way of spamming, because links to companies in replies don't usually look like spam. As a reply the post is less likely to be deleted than a blatant spam.

Hey simondrains. Must say buddy, you are quite a curious fellow. You are right - gate and fence is a great device.
The traditional labor intensive methods like shouting, rocks and shotguns is probably a better method though.

We use a dry ice blasting company twice a year to clean weld spatter from our robot welding fixtures does a great job, downside is any unprotected wiring (sensor cables etc.) tend to get damaged.
We get 10 fixtures cleaned on a Saturday then spend Sunday replacing damaged sensors!
Oh, and don't try it on thin aluminium, you can count the dents from each pellet!

Viral marketing is where you put something interesting up on the net and other people tell their friends about it. What these guys are doing is spam.

Sadly Google is quite good at looking at word patterns - everytime they see a link to that site they'll also see the same combination of words - a strong indication that something unnatural is going on. I reckon their hard work will pick them up a penalty or more likely a complete ban in Google. If it was allowed to work then every other company on the planet would also do it, and that would get annoying.
