Early Record No.3 vice

I’ve been gifted another Record 3 in a bit of a neglected state, but it’s an early one with the patent numbers cast on the side so a nice one for the collection.

Interestingly, it looks like this was machined using a scraper rather than a fly cutter as on the later vices ?

Quick update, managed to get this sliding jaw and the baby paramo in primer/ undercoat.
The main body doesn’t seem to be responding to the de-rusting
I suspect it’s got shellac or similar over an earlier oxidised layer

How do you find evaporust? I know the YouTubers push it hard but not seen it for myself.

I’ve only just started using it, and I’m impressed.
It’s gentler than citric acid and I’ve basically done 7 vices and a Jenny with one 5L tub
It’s past it’s best now and it doesn’t work so well in the cold but I’ll be buying some more.
I found a good technique on GJ the other day too.
Put object in rubble sack, put derusting fluid of choice in bag with it
Place bag in plastic tub
Fill up tub with warm water
I’ll be trying this next time as it’ll save turning stuff over in the tub and 5L will go a lot further as a result

First coat on the undersides.
Not sure on top coat colour yet but quite liked the red internals on the last one I did so thought I’d carry it on



(They are on the floor as the Chinese heater was blowing over them)

I have it’s brother, bought new by me in 1966/7 with my first weeks pay in a holiday job, and still in daily use on my bench today in good working order.

On the early Records there’s a ‘Record’ stamp in a little box on the sliding jaw. It’d often hard to find, but it is there.
