Always wondered why no one produced a cheap screw type compressor aimed at the diy market, hydrovanes I guess are the nearest thing but too pricey for most diyers until they come up as used.

With space usually being at a premium the quietness of this type would be a real bonus when you’re in a small workshop and don’t have room to site your compressor elsewhere.

I dont get how it is ultra efficient. They claim 12Cfm from 3.3hp. My piston compressor is rated to 14Cfm from 3hp.
I like the idea of being compact and quiet though

Rule of thumb... if something costs $100 in the US then it costs £100 in the UK as most things seem cheaper over there. There's a company in the UK that imports Eastwood products but can't think of their name right now.

I looked at some of their compressors a while back, most of what I saw states 'not for use with air tools'. Worth checking before purchasing. Seems most of their range are designed for medical/dental use. Perhaps they have a specific range for the workshop that I missed.

ATM i'm bodgeing an idea for a compressor together, aircon pump , 3ph motor and vdf, overspeed the motor at low pressure to get more cfm when the pump will need less torque to drive

have put a vfd on a piston compressor before, it works very well, it works best with an oversized pump ass small pumps loose volumetric efficency fast.

a pump that would normaly need 5hp can be driven by a 3 hp motor on a vfd. just need a resonably weighty pully on the pump or motor to help smooth the mecanical load out and drive it " constant power " within a set of limutes. also by useing a digital pressure switch with programable 0-5v output you can loose the start stops, if you only need 90 the compressor will just chug allong as pressure drops towards 90 it revs up as its above 100 it starts slowing down , saves a lot of power.

First time I've seen these ideas, look good! Time for a bit more reading.

I'm sticking to piston compressors purely because they cost so little to fix. Imagine how much parts for that Eastwood snail compressor are going to cost if the pump or motor blows.

I just won a very nice little turbine hvlp system on eBay for £25, so my days of using a compressor might well be numbered. I use cordless tools for everything else and inflate my tyres with CO2 as running up the compressor is such a pain being off grid.

I tried this with a Hydrovane 502. I was trying to underun the motor to get a quieter delivery but found that with direct drive and not enough inertia (heavy pulley) it started cogging on the motor and stalling. Would probably have worked much better if I'd started with a 501 and over run it to 2850rpm. The pump body is the same, so as long as the motor can withstand the extra speed (which I would think it can as it's the same frame) you'd get 502 output with the ability to have pressure dependant speed for lower noise.

They're claiming 12cfm at 90psi. Most piston compressor ratings are displacement, i.e. at 0psi. 14cfm displacemt is normally about 8-9cfm @90psi I think
