EEK! anti theft on VW Golf

Bit of help needed here... Friends asked me to run their Golf 6 into the garage for a service. They live in London at the mo, but have a house in the village.
So, I look in the drawer and their are two sets of keys, one with house and other stuff, so I choose the fob without extras.
Go out to the car and it starts, but dies. Several times.. and the message comes up the the immobiliser is activated.
So I get the other set of keys and get the same result. Seems the first key was lost and the system re-programed for the second set.
Now, is there any way to use the current key to get the car working? (why they didn't throw the first key in the bin I ....)
Some sort of way of re coding by a sequence on the buttons? Otherwise it has to be towed to VW and they will reset it for a suitable (blood sucking ) fee.

Lock the car and leave it for a while, the immobilzer system sometimes will time out and reset itself.

RAC will do it for you, but I think they will need to see the V5.

I did that on my old SuperDuke R. I was selling it and the buyer was turning up any minute. Sorting out the paperwork I found another key for it. "Ooh, better make sure that one works" Yeah it "worked" alright, disabled the primary key and immobilised the bike!

Some frantic searches later and you use the keys in combination, switching on/off waiting, pressing buttons following a set procedure to re-enable the key.

Its easy when you know how. You just need to find out how...

does it have an aftermarket imobiliser?
golfs are hot targets in brum and companies have started fitting aftermarket imobilisers.
the most comen one is having to press a sequence of buttons before the car will let you start it

try locking and unlocking after a short while with the key in the lock, if you use remote to lock and key to unlock or visa versa, that can set the imob off.

I had a moped which had an immobiliser and had to be reset with the other key but then the first key would not work if it was within 2 metres of the reset key so you had to reset the scooter, take the key out and put it away before trying to start it with the original key.

Door lock and immobiliser are two different modules in VAG, adapting a limited number of fobs to the lock module is easy the immobiliser 'should' need the SCK.

Not a good idea to "try". You need to find out exactly how the system works, follow those instructions to the letter. If you're going to wing it and get it wrong too many times, you might end up with a very large bill and/or a useful little door stop.

Latest news is that are leaving it to VW, as the Ins will cover the tow and fix.
