Eland 130 - Fixing control board, help needed please.

My Eland 130 puts the wire out all the time at full speed. The pot tests ok and no obvious visible faults. I have plenty of test gear here, but haven't worked on speed controllers before, so can anyone help please with practical advice or a circuit maybe? Steve.

If it is one of the simple type boards, you may have a transistor that has gone short.
Can you post a photo ?

Hi, I have an Eland MIG 130 if it helps I can take (electrical) measurments on mine to compare with yours. Let me know what you need.

Do you have any info on these I've been trying to get hold of a circuit etc since I bought it 2nd hand about 12 months ago. Works perfectly at the moment but would like some info incase it packs up.

Not much help from me, I'm afraid.
I would check the large output transistor (PNP ?) and if that's a driver transistor next to it,it also.

It is probably the transistor on the heat sink, the "BDX" one. You should be able to get one from Farnell or an equivalent. There are PNP or NPN types just make sure you get the right one. Can probably google it and get the specs. Also check the legs on the other trans and the back of the board for crook joints as in cracks etc, magnifying glass is the best way, a board that old will probably have a bit of corrosion etc on the soldered joints. You may as well fix those up while you are at it.

Normally that transistor will fail due to an excessive overload from the motor so check all your wire feed section.

I would replace the big transistor and the two smaller metal can ones. Ones of that vintage tend to fail due to the impurities and slow leaks in the case over time. Prevent the need to rework later.

All three trannies are corroded and bad to read. Power one looks like BDX18. Sound right? Think I'll renew all three , clean the board up and see how it goes then. Thanks guys. Steve.
