Electroplated Zinc?

Got a question for everyone...

Galvanised is easy to spot because of the large "crystals", but what about this stuff? Is this electroplated zinc on steel as I suspect? Just in case I ever come across it. I've got a feeling that it's only reserved for "rustproofing" cheap tools.

Looks like zinc plating with a gold passivate finish, very common

Isnt that zinc plating with a yellow chromate passivation.....
The passivation give itt a little more resistance to corrosion. No idea how it work mind.


If its cadmium, dont use it for praticing welding... heating cadmium is quite poisonous.

I'd say cadmium plate. I wouldn't think they would bother with the cost of passivating a cheap tool like that.

I thought that stuff is commonly called 'yellow zinc'. Went to B&Q and they sell screws in that colour and the label called them yellow zinc. It comes off really easy with a stainless wire brush on a drill. Probably zinc chromate

Cadmium is banned for all but very special industrial use as a plating method. I tried to get some done a while back, no one would do it.

Zinc with some kind of finish I'd guess at.

Just re-awakening this thread cos I am just about to replace the front ARB links and the new ones are supplied with this coating. Would you bother to paint these before installation?

It's still zinc and colour passivate, 8 months later. Cadmium I believe, is now only used for parts on high altitude aircraft. It's a good commercial plating, it will last, but not forever. Obviously, if you paint it, it will look better for longer.
