Elliot/Pollard Progress 2S Pillar Drill

Hi there folks,

just bought an Progress 2S box column pillar drill, pretty much all there, its missing a few little screws for some guards and access plates, the wiring is just a plug at the moment so that need fixing, and the paints seen better days...

On the plus side its got NO play at all, runs sweet and quiet, has a nice metabo mt2 keyed chuck.... and weighs a fecking ton!

Very strange - nothing like the Elliot Progress I've got.

"Progress" was used by a few different manufacturers, BEC may be one of them.

Any chance of a shot of the head? I wonder if the belt cover has been taken off an Elliot progress?

Which bit? Its in a lot of bits at the moment as i stripped it to get it home.

Any info on BEC like what it stands for..? I had a look google wasn't yielding much.

I've looked on Google and Grace's Guide, nothing.

I did Google "Square column pillar drills", it seems they were designed that way because the square column stands up better to the reaction to the drilling torque. Apparently they were used on the more powerful machines.

Might be worth checking against the Pollard range. That unit does have quite a few similarities in regard to how they constructed their units.

Your right Matt it does, the corona range has the same looking pillar, the single handle for moving the chuck up and down and has the motor at the back not on top like the other pollards. They also have the long shaft for the spindle and similar dovetail slides.

That would have been my first guess if you hadn't said it was a Progress. It does seem slightly different somehow, (can't place what exactly), to the Corona's I can recall seeing, but it's very close in most regards. This is the other side of a bench top Corona, to see if that looks similar to your styling and motor adjustment method on the other side of the drill.

Look for a name cast into the bottom of the stand.

It's similar but there's some differences, I wonder if it's an older version?

If it is a Pollard, then if anything I'd say yours is likely to be newer rather than older. The simple reason I'd guess that way would be the clamping arrangement around the spindle on the movable lower section. That arrangement as in the two photo's above was in use by Pollard for donkeys years, (three screws rather than just one), right back to the old lineshaft equipment days, so any alterations in design would likely make it newer.

I know this is an old thread but I just picked up this drill. The only markings are a tag with B.E.C. on it. Can't find any info on them, anyone recognise it?

Only kiddng, that's a nice looking bench drill, have you tried Lathes.co.UK for identification.
Have you got 3 phase in the new workshop?

Hi John, Did recognise you then. 3 Phase is at the back of the workshop now, just got to get someone to come and connect it all up! You'll have to pop by if your ever in the area.
