Elliott Pillar Drill

Anyone know what would be a suitable gloss (Satin, semi-gloss, gloss) for an old Elliott Pillar Drill?

I have some Lechler epoxy and also some 2k polyurethane (glossy) that I could use but mainly wondering if the 2k polyurethane would be too shiny?

Weren't machines like that panelled in a hammerite style finish?

No don't think so. Solid paint I think.

Bar machines finished in Hammerite style finishes, glossy is not something I can ever recall seeing on owt of mine on original paint. Satin is my personal preferred finish.

Thanks. Found a good semi gloss so that should do. I assume the old machines were painted with enamel which just dulled over time but I could be wrong.

Will get my wife to help with the colour.

It could well be that they just dulled, due to time, solvents, oil etc. Half the problem with anything old is trying to get the paint something like right. Seems to cause more grief than owt else, that bit. Plus, it seems a lot of manufacturers were prone to using whatever they could get hold of at the time. I assume wartime conditions would have made that scenario even more common.

She won't be picking the colour, she will colour matching it for me. I'm colour blind so Christ knows what colour it would be if left for me to try and pick the correct colour.

Just to annoy the 'that's not the original colour' brigade I generally paint stuff in whatever colour and finish takes my fancy that will do the job

Must admit, (as you can probably tell from a lot of the stuff I've done), I don't obsess over keeping with original colours, generally. I do like to stick with traditional colours and finishes though.

I would use Boxford lathe blue grey from 'Stationary engine parts' really excellent and durable enamel.

Good God no. Grey, light blue and yellow are three colours which should be banned for use on tools and machinery, IMHO.

S&B? Can't go wrong with black and white. Simple and timeless.

Makes you wonder if some of the company's had shares in a filler company, doesn't it. Some kit is terrible for it, and then some is nigh on perfect straight out of the mould. That big old Rapidor was by far the worst in that regard, out of all my kit. I swear there was more filler on that thing than metal. My arms were practically dead by the time I'd finally scraped it all off. Apart from one blow hole and some minor imperfections though, there was nothing that warranted the amount of filler they'd applied.

a lot of old machinery castings had faults and blow -holes in them and were filled . cosmetic --but as long as the working surfaces were ok theres -not a problem and were used
