Hi,

I know lots of you on here have these drills, I just wanted to share some photos of mine that I recently acquired. It sat for many years in a garage unused.

So far I have just cleaned and rewired it and fitted a new A46 drive belt. I have fitted a Rohm MT2 chuck. Still to do is to replace the sight glass and do an oil change.

Mine is fitted with a rather large 1hp brook capacitor start motor with centrifugal switch.

Excellent machines. I've had mine since about 1982. Mine is very rare - it has no drill marks in the table. Yours is almost pristine, too. Take care of it

One issue I’m getting with it, is although the drill runs smooth enough, I’m getting some wobble in the motor causing the belt to flap about a bit. The motor mounting plate appears to be original but it has some flex in it, presumably to assist speed changes on the pulley. I bought a new Dunlop A46 drive belt and have set the tension not too tight as when tightened up, seemed to make the wobble worse. I’m considering making some sort of support from the top of the motor mounting plate to the body of the drill to stop the flex?

The motr bolts to a cast iron plate. That plate has two fixed guide rails which run in the casting. They, in turn, are locked with a bolt each side. There can only be wobble if something is loose. Take it apart and have a look, it's the work of minutes.

Im getting a few new bits from Gate engineering on eBay. Looks like they’re clearing some NOS stock from the stores.

Hi all,

Spent an afternoon in the garage today. Drained and replaced, oil approx 1 pint. Replaced sight glass as old one was cracked. Inspected gear arrangement and dogs inside gearbox which seem in good shape. Replaced cork gasket on gear selector plate (NOS) when finished. I have also had the motor off and tightened the motor mounting feet and sliding posts which were all a bit loose. The drill is running way smoother now and the belt is not flapping about half as much.

My Progress 2G was missing some of the belt cover attachment hardware, I've managed to source most bits but could someone post a photo of how it's assembled (I'm probably still missing something). Items I do have...Stud and locknut threaded into main casting, knob, notched tube, collar with threaded side hole and a long spring.

The stud should have a pin sticking out to one side, near the thread. This engages in the bayonet slot in the sleeve.

Mine does not have the spring down the length of the hollow tube like yours does. It just relies on the small spring type washer under the knob on top to keep it all on place. Is this a modification that you did or am I missing mine?

You're missing the spring. The spring holds the cover up so you can change the belts without taking the cover off.

My stud is missing the pin.

Any idea how the tube is attached to the knob? Also, is that a thackery washer between knob an cover?

Finally how long is the spring?

No idea on how its fitted I'm afraid, I can maybe have a look tomorrow. Yes, the Thackery washer keeps some tension on the cover to hold it down when the pin is engaged in the tube.

I have to keep my belt fairly tight to stop it flapping about, so when changing belt speeds I have to remove the cover anyway to avoid trapping a finger or 2

I've never taken the knob off the tube. There is no screw or pin that I can see, and I don't think that it's threaded on. It must be a drive fit. Yes, Thacheray washer and the tube is then retained with a collar on the underside of the cover. The spring is original and pops the cover up to aid removal or belt changing. Without the pin in the stud your cover won't lock down.

Thanks for the link. This is the place I got my sight glass and cork gasket from. It looks to be an outlet for Gate machinery who presumably bought out Elliott. It looks like they’re clearing out the stores so when this stock is gone it is gone forever

Yep I bought the knob, tube, collar and spring from that eBay seller who is Gate Machinery - supplier of Elliott spares.
The spring seems too long (approx 2.5 X length of stud) but expect it will compress under weight of cover.
Tempted to purchase a new quill but it doesn't look the same (different part no too) as the illustration in the manual

I am missing that nice plate off the side of mine that shows the pulleys and speeds if anyone had a spare.
