Engine frost plug removal

Is there a better way to remove these besides use a bigger hammer? Three came out easy, one put up a huge fight. Too much grease around to put a torch on it, maybe should have rolled it outside. Weld a stud on to the stubborn one?

I've always got by with banging a chisel through them and levering them out, never needed any heat or welding.

Yes just knock a hole in them then just prised it out

I'll try that next time instead of hitting it harder with my hammer and chisel.

Punch a hole into it, then lever it out.

But give it a Mk1 eyeball to see if some one has used a setting sealant on it.

That will hold the dam thing tighter than a seal bum.

If that doesn't work, weld a M6 bolt onto it and pull it out.

That was what was left of it after a proper beating & extraction

Must have been a leaker that someone super goop sealed

I normally punch a whole in the middle then use a a coach bolt (i think thats the correct name, a course self tapping thread with a hex head) and claw hammer or get one with an eye head and use a slide hammer.

You can make / get a special tool but its just like a tech screw and a U shaped plate with a hole in it.

I had a ford straight 6 that was leaking from a couple of them so I changed them all, I just hit them with a straight punch to one side and they spun then yanked them out, I might have been lucky.

Yup, how it is supposed to work, except for one of mine. Making a tool good idea if doing again, or leave alone!

a bit late in the day but there not frost plugs. there core plugs used for holding the core when the block was cast

I can't help thinking that if they were that difficult to remove then they were sound and didn't need replacing.

I think it's one of those things that would leak within a week if you didn't replace it whilst rebuilding the engine

Three easy to replace plugs would have leaked, the *&!! tight one would not have leaked after a century on the sea bed, but I'd beaten it before I figured this out
