Engineer’s blue

Does anyone know which blue @doubleboost uses? It seems to come off the brush nicely and give an even coat, while mine from a tin comes out all blobby and uneven. Too thick and your marks self-heal, too thin and you can’t see it. Hard to get it right.

Are you mixing up engineers blue and layout blue fluid in liquid or a pen

Yes, I thought they were the same thing. What’s the difference, or should I go and look it up somewhere?

Eng blue spreads to all it sees one of the few things that spread like the plague marking blue is more of an ink
I use an Eddings 850 permanent marker it will re fill with bit of meths, not as good as new but ok,
Not proper marking fluid but ok on small layouts

"Layout fluid" is what you want , Micromiter blue is for rubbing two surfaces to see highspots or engagement ( and for making everything in the sink blue when you wash your hands but they've left all their baking stuff in the sink...still getting heat for that!)

Im sure John can tell you which one he uses.

I always knew the marking out fluid as Spectra blue and the "engineers blue" as micrometer blue, that way no confusion.

If you want your markings to last a bit longer and not rub off on the hands so easily, disolve some shellac flakes in acetone.
For the dye/ink I use wilko chunky marker pens. Squeze the foam ink tube into the pot of disolved shellac, stir, then add back to the pen.

I use dykem marking out fluid
A blue permanent marker also works very well

That seems a lot of effort for the price of a bottle of dykem....it lasts a long long time, I've not found it to rub off clean surfaces particularly, or onto my hands (once dry!)

And I make my own shellac lacquer from flakes and methylated spirit.

I made the same mistake & bought engineers blue, thinking it was what we used in school many years ago for marking out. God it made a mess the first time I used it!
Kept intending to buy the correct stuff but a thick sharpie does the job nearly as well.
