Engineer's Cube / Angle plate rusting

What is the best and cheapest way to stop my 1' cube from rusting? it is not in regular use, sometimes it may see no attention for a good couple of months. I have other instruments and steel equipment in their cases or wood boxes in a cupboard.
Should I build a wood cover? If so, what wood?
It currently gets a slather of motor oil. Would diesel be better? White grease is cheap in a spray can but would take a lot of cleaning off to use the thing?

The building is damp and can't be heated. This cube isn't to any particular tolerance or calibrated and doesn't need to be. It took me ages to clean it up with Wet or Dry, done wet with oil.

I have a flat ground glass surface and a granite one.

I have made various bits of tooling for my lathe and mill, these are given a spray of WD40 and kept in some custom home made wooden boxes ( any old dead tree wood that was to hand) to protect them from damp and physical damage.
If your cube is stored in a cupboard then just give it a spray of WD and put inside a stout polythene bag.

I use ACF-50 on my angle plates chucks etc nothing has rusted yet stored in a cupboard

as in post 3 just spray with wd 40 and put it in a carrier bag beadblasted all my stuff beore i did. all; looks new

I never thought about a carrier bag!
At the training school as an apprentice we spent the last hour of every week with emery on them, and the marking out table (don't remember a wood top)
