Is any one familar with the enots brass pumps like the one in the link below?
I presume the arrow on the cover dictactes the way it should turnDoesnt look gear pump to me, casing not normally round. if its vane make sure you turn it in the right direction. Id whip the end cover off and have a look.

There are lots of differnt packing for valve glands etc, selection is dependant on its service, the link above will give you an idea. Its basically a fiberous material impregnated with graphite etc. cord like a starter cord dipped in oil would work if wrapped around the shaft then the gland tightened up, for testing purposed.
A centrifugal pump needs a positive head, the impeller rotates, imparting velocity to the fluid. The pressure is generated by pushing the out going fluid through the static part. Impeller needs to be quite a good fit in the fixed part or the fluid will just pass back to the suction.
