ER20 collets not quite right

I decided to give collets a try for my mill. They arrived today, imagine my surprise when putting them in order

The 1/8th is no problem but 1/2" is the minimum. They have 0.1mm run out but for a cheap set I think that's pretty good.
Would you send them back?

It's about as good as the mill gets. I checked the quill and it has some run out added to that the 3 to 2 reducer adds a bit more then getting down to the bit of bar I clocked it was around 0.1mm

Do you mean 0.1mm or 0.01mm? 0.1mm runout is awful even for cheap collets.

Cutwel does good value collets, 0.01mm standard runout, 0.005mm for high accuracy.

I'd be fairly confident in collects from arceurotrade too, The collet chuck u git from them was absolutely perfect.

Sadly I do mean 0.1mm but that is the stack up. The run out wasn't the issue, the 2 imperial collets mixed in with the metric ones is more my issue!
They are just cheap things as the mill is not worth buying expensive stuff for

It would be worth recutting your collet taper in a lathe, assuming you couldnt do it in place?
Try rotating chuck/reducer in the spindle.

I don't currently have a working lathe. I did try rotating and even changing for a different reducer. I clocked the quill and it has a 0.02mm run out, the reducer adds another 0.03mm then collet chuck and work piece all add up to the 0.1mm

Cheers I will give it a go after work tomorrow. The mill is a late 90's Axminster (made in Taiwan!) Unit that I have known since new.
I purchased it for the company I worked at and in 2004 they sold it to me as no one used it.
It's ok but the the best or most accurate!

Do you think they consider the imperial/metric interchangeable in those sizes? What's the grip range on them?
Or do you think they have run out of those sizes and just substituted with something close?

I could see the 1/2 being picked by mistake for a 12 but the 1/8 is not..
Unless it's the correct collets in the wrong boxes I would at least contact the seller and ask, they might send out the correct ones and let you keep the others!

I got them from Amazon. They were tightly packed so picked wrong at source I should think? With chuck and spanner only £30 so I'm not too worried.
I may try and purchase the 12 separately but I will see what Amazon say!

some bargain basement collets can be that bad, I'm still using a 1-2 mm from the first set that I bought and have to use my collet chuck in a 4 jaw chuck if I want to get it anywhere near.

Just as an update I purchased an open ended 2-3 Morse taper to allow the draw bar to pull the chuck into the taper. This has reduced the total run out to 0.06mm. To be fair I am happy with that considering the cost and my usage. I tried a H7 8mm reamer in it and the result was acceptable with a nice fit on the dowel.

Much better, my er40 can actually achieve ~0.01mm, but realistically its only going to be that if kept clean....which I'm not brilliant at.
