esab 6011

Hi all,

Since leaving college all I have ever seemed to use when using MMA are Murex 6013's but I have just been given a tin full of Esab 6011's and I just cant seem to get a good weld with them! I admit to not being greatly up to speed with other rods so forgive my ignorance but does my welder need altering to run them and if so why are they different? Im in no rush to use them as I have pile of 6013's to get through I just thought I would have a practice

They are cellulose rods so they will never look neat like a 6013
they are deep penetrating and fast freezing, and normally used in a whip and pause motion.whip forward to penetrate base metal, then pause to fill.can look like a dirty version of doing a stack of dimes with tig
those esab are probably nu5? Not all machines can keep them lit properly.needs a lot of volts for them to work

am i right in thinking either 6010 or 6011 ar dc only?

i found 6011 to look rough and not as tidy as 6013 but after cutting a weld open i was very pleased with the penetration

6010 are dc only,6011 ac or dc.

If they are ac and dc then why would I find them not that nice to weld with?

As I said above, the welder needs a lot of volts to light them up, or once they get them ignited, it would struggle to keep them lit.normally 90 open circuit volts or more on a single phase inverter.
compare that to a parweld arc inverter which is about 65, rtech welder would be same, maybe 70.

i was using 3 phase machine when i used them, haven't tried them on my inverter. Can remember seeing they needed a high ocv though.

Three phase machines are able to cope with the power needs to run them a lot better, but a lot will still outright refuse to run them.
the problems occur when using them to weld open root, which is practically all they are really used for this side of the Atlantic.
they can strike up and stay going when you keep a tight arc, but open rooting normally requires you to move the rod forward out of the puddle and back into it in a constant too and fro movement.when you move forward the arc length is long, too long for some machines to deal with and the arc extinguishes. Not ideal when doing something to xray standard, which open root pipe and plate is normally subjected to.

To use cellulosics you need a transformer welder with a high voltage range, or an inverter with a special setting, or one capable of detecting the rod type and setting the current characteristic itself, or a motor driven welder.

You won't run them on a buzz box or most inverters. Not only do you need a high (about 90V) OCV the welding power source needs a drooping characteristic to stabilise the arc.

A single phase inverter with high ocv will be able to run 6011, most anyway.OCV I actually dont think is what counts anyway, but working voltage.
6010,7010 can be a totally different story.a 230v inverter normally has to be physically changed to a CEL setting, ones that claim to sense the rod and change curve I have my doubts about, when you think of the biggest manufacturers, Fronius, Lorch, EWM,Lincoln, Esab, all have to be switched to change over.Miller inverters need the dig to be turned up to 6010 setting to work properly.there are middle range machines that are advertised as cellulose compatible,or able to weld cellulose, but unless they are advertised as'compatible with cellulose in the vertical down position' then they really arent CEL compatible. They might burn one okay, but it would be hit or miss whether a particular position or even a particular brand of rod would cause it huge problems.
