Hi folks, long time lurker on this forum but joined up eventually as my welder gets delivered tomorrow , After reading on here I eventually went for the Clarke 100e Mk2, hopefully this will suit my project and ability (None yet )

I'm restoring a mk1 golf GTi at the moment so its all fairly thin stuff I'm going to be playing with.

I learned Oxy welding some years ago during my apprenticeship but having never used it again I wont rely on remembering all that much

I'm a mechanical engineer to trade in the defence nuclear sector, and I am almost embarrased to say I am more than comfortable specifying welds to others that I cant actually do myself, but I suppose its probably a good place to start, I have spent alot of time in TWI in Middlesbrough so fingers crossed some of it has rubbed off on me.

I have stacks of scrap and the useful guides on here so Initially lots of practice and I have a tame nuclear welder who has been convinced to turn teacher before I start welding in earnest.

Anyway the forum looks good and friendly and I apologise in advance for maybe asking a noob question or two but I'll be sure to do a search first

A big welcome. With a little gas welding training to get the idea there ought to be some sort of a weld pool, and the understanding of what welds ought to end up like you should pick it up in no time. Tutorial can hopefully fill in the gaps for car welding.

Ask away with any troubles you come up against. And anything you could pass on to us related to nuclear standard welding and finishing would be very interesting - those must be the toughest standards of welding going. I had a placement 20 years ago with a company that welded parts for the nuclear industry and learned that any flaws were bad, and that removing a hot earth clamp (as requested) was even worse.

This is one of the main rule books of the nuclear welds and due to FOI its all public domain now

That's an interesting read, a welder is the person performing the welding operation not the machine being used. Who is the bloke with his name at the top of each page, DEF STAN and what sent him DEF ?
