Exhaust Silencers sourcing

Any idea on where one might be able to source a new (possibly stainless) muffler (centre bit) like the following?

It's roughly 9" in diameter for a 4l NA diesel. It's for my JCB 2CX which is very tight in the engine bay, this wraps around and sits on top to send it out the bonnet.

I'm bodging the old one back together but I've seen thicker paper than what's left of most of it so would like to replace it when I can. All people who stock it are out of stock and of the order of £300+. Given it's sat about 3ft behind me when the engine is running flat out I don't want to straight pipe it. It's also a bit of a shonky setup for supporting it hence thinking about building one so I can put some proper hangers on it.

Any good proper exhaust fab place should be able to make one in stainless.

That is what I'm doing but what's left is so thin that it's a case of chasing holes. All I was really after was the silencer bit - I'm quite happy to weld up the remaining connecting pieces etc. all I could find from a quick search were car style Silencers which won't fit. There's plenty of places locally that I can get scraps of stainless for building up the rest of it.

My experience of when those sites say it's out of stock it's basically no longer available. I had it with the conrods, was going to take best part of a year to become available.

I came across those, they're the wrong part from what I can see. Mines a 95 era one with a Perkins 1004 engine in it. That, at a guess, I think is for the mid 2000s vehicles which had a different engine.

62.5mm is the OD of the elbow off the manifold. It reduces in size slightly on the output but not significantly.

I did last night and the one listed on Vicary is also about £300 and listed as out of stock on backorder which in my experience means unlikely to become available.

I was trying to find a photo but don't have a decent one but the exhaust is a bit of a shonky design which is probably why it broke. Basically the far side of the silencer is the pipe from the manifold (does a full 180 as it comes up the side of the engine bay) then into the side of the silencer. There is then a spring loaded plate which pushes up against a "manifold" that goes through the bonnet to the actual exhaust pipe. There should be a bracket coming over towards the head under the expansion bottle but that sheared the bolt off in the head due to vibration before I bought the JCB. Thus the whole thing is unsupported apart from the manifold -> silencer pipe. Even so when the bracket is on it's a shonky design that doesn't support it very well.

Hence why I'm thinking of redesigning it, either put an exhaust hanger to the bonnet underside or possibly just a bigger bracket down to the back of the head which will support it better.

I have used both of these extensively over the last 10 years.

If its as rusty as you say chances are the fibreglass wool packing inside is burnt away too so it's not working as a silencer any more.

I would suggest trying GT exhausts, a company local to me. They make exhausts & are the oe supplier to some folks like GM.
If they haven't got that silencer they might make one for you, not be cheap though! If they have a main box with similar dimensions and pipe locations you could modify that to suit.

Very good point. At the moment it's more of a case of getting something together so the engine bay doesn't fill with soot.

Particuarly as we've just had 3x 80+ft ash trees come down so more clean up to do.

It looks very much like a Massey Ferguson tractor exhaust.

Something like this could maybe be chopped up and used.

£100 cheaper here.

Well trees down blocking roads and general mess meant farmers fix happened this morning when power came back on.

This shows how tight it is in there. Previously I was unbolting manifold bolts and then intake and exhaust had to be wiggled out together. This time as it had rusted through where the exhaust paste is and the upper elbow I cut those off and managed to wiggle it out.

Once it was on the bench two of the nuts came off the manifold and one sheared. I drilled and retapped the broken stud and used a bolt in its place.

The upper portion with the spring I used 2.5mm rods to sort of weld it back together. The paste is a last ditch hopefully seal things up better. Then as it was dry I managed to bring the MIG back to the work bench and welded up the elbow.

For now it works and has bought some time to source a replacement.

Probably leave it as is and take it down to the sawmill in the village if I can think of anything to use it for.

The other 3/4 of the tree is still in the paddock and there's four more slightly smaller ones as was near this one plus a 8x8x20ft pile of logs still to cut up. @fizzy is meant to be emptying our log shed as our only open fire is currently out of action (sitting room slowly being renovated) and he needed some logs. He'll get around to it eventually I'm sure but he's rather busy with other things at the moment.
