Extractor/Ventilator fan ?

I have been thinking about separating the welding area by a welding screen and maybe fitting an extractor, while mooching about i have seen these which i havnt seem before and sound to be better quality than the chinese stuff about.

I would likey be fitting it to fixed galvanised ducting and around 3m long at most.

has anybody used these and what are thoughts on them.

i dont know any painters with booths kida to ask. cant see a paint shop let me mooching about. And doubt thye will have these small extractors on there set ups lol.

out of the 2 the bottom ones the most powerfull 2500 m 3 h air movement the top one only 1400 m 3 h. price isnt bad niether for its size

They're not what you want for a home workshop as 300 mm dia is going to be expensive for duct and fittings and these won't have much pressure available to overcome the resistance that it creates. You would be better with a small mixed flow fan if you want to duct the fumes or easier still, a couple of through the wall fans if you can put them near the welding bench / area. if you are mainly doing mig then a low level extract as well as a high is good as the shield gas is heavier than air and therefore an asphyxiant if you let it build up.The beauty of wall fans is that you can get them with integral shutters so you don't loose all of your heat when they are not working.

The issue with welding is that you hardly ever create the hazard in the same place twice so a fixed ventilation solution is never going to work

Also not correct. What good is the size of the fan if it ain’t doing the right thing in the right place?

I’m live on this one as I’ve spent the last few days ripping apart a LEV company for exactly this issue, related to control of welding fume

im not comenting if the fan is suitable just stating the fact the bottom of the 2 is more powerfull so correct on my comment

Who am I to argue with the internet

It’s not about quality of fan, the issue is about effectiveness of control, it don’t really matter about the fan as they more or less do the same thing
It’s all about where and how the fan captures the contaminant

Same thing happens every time, so it’s over to the experts

Not uncommon amongst the guys working in their garage in the winter with the doors all shut. Probably not many admit to it or even realise that the gas is all down with them when they are lying under the car welding it. Isn't W.olly just talking about segregating a bit of his home workshop.

Where is your evidence of accident or injury statistics for welding related asphyxiation ?

What I'm saying is that there are many who have felt the effects of lack of oxygen by it being displaced by shield gas - I'm not saying killed by it.

Often tig welded in containers on sites and you would be wrecked tired from purging and welding stainless pipes, a fan in the container or shed will definitely move away gases and fumes, and is a great help. Putting on an air fed is probably the best way for total protection
