Field gate hanging.

I am a little confused...

I thought that the gate would have a pair of threaded pins so that the gate can be adjusted for offset as well as hang angle, yet all the sets I have seen appear to have some sort of plain spike supplied. How is that fitted and is it really good enough for the job?

I have a 12' five bar, tatty gate to hang which is a little too narrow for the opeing, so will have to cut it in half and fit some extensions. Therefore there will not be so much weight on one post (which probably hasn't been installed to spec). I am also intending to henge it on the rear face to avoid cars scraping the pins.

The spike ones just hammer in to a pre-drilled hole in the post, they're obviously not very adjustable. There are various options for adjustable ones, have a look on this website for a few ideas:

This is a set I looked at. It seems a bit Heath Robinson to just hammer a square peg into a round hole?

Indeed it is, I fitted a couple of 10 foot gates recently and there's no way I was going to trust one of the peg hinges. I basically bought that kit and then another bottom threaded pin as an extra and used that on the top. At least then it had a nut preventing it being pulled out of the post when the gate was inline with the pin and the weight was hanging on it.

The weight of the gate is mainly on the top crook

either dig a hole and fit a h or i girder into concrete behind the posts

then you can bolt to it

or cross brace the first pic far end and use normal dill through gate hinges but thats for internal

the nearest side will need a girder

if wanting an internal gate you need pole straps with adjustable gate pins

you also want to support on the swing outs as well

Invert the top pin so no-one can just lift the gate off. 'Tis how most of our field gates are hung, but obviously the vertical load is on the bottom pin then. Top pin takes most of the sideways force.

I have just been doing some measuring up. The distance between opposing faces of the gateposts is 3770. The tatty old gate is 2710 so I probably would better hanging that in one piece and then using a 1m "pedestrian" gate hanging off the other post, or maybe a bifold arrangement if the post can cope. The gateposts are 150mm.

Mark vertical on your hanging post and the locations where you want the hooks.

Drill the top hole right through with the right size bit to let the threaded portion slide tap through with a hammer. The square portion should bind. You may need a helper to make sure the hole is level.

Loosely slide the top hook in.

Drill the bottom hole, same drill bit. Eye the angle with the top hole and drill it parallel with the top one. Again a helper might be needed for level. No need to go much beyond where the main shank will go depth wise

Hammer in bottom spike a sensible amount but not too far. Wind in top hook / hammer the bottom to get both hooks level and sticking out the desired amount.

You need to end up with both hooks upright in both planes orvtge gate will bias one way or another.

The kit will hang a 12' gate with no issues. Although, as the picture set is for a wooden gate, not sure how successful lengthening it will be.

Having looked briefly at online prices for made to order field gates, I think it would be daft to stick with plan A and may as well order a pair of new ones to actually fit the gap.

Anyone on here that does wooden gates to order, I would like to hear about it.

I have that set on an 11' wooden gate, been up for 20 years and its still working fine

The idea behind the drive in bottom hook is that it shouldn’t push deeper into the post over time. If you use a bolt through bottom hook in the bottom it can push into the post over time and cause the gate to drop.
