filler rods? stupid question?? confused!!!

ok then I have no Experience in Tig Welding infact My New /first Tig is in transit as we speak ( or at Least it bloody should be ). I have had a quick Look at Tig welding Tutorials and already Knew That filling Rod are used but am confused about them . I hare had a Look on EBay but Could only seem To Find Stainless steel ones. SO would apreciate an Idiots Guide To them Please. eg do they do mild steel rods ( my main use Probably) , what Rods for what Materials to be Welded , and Could Mig wire be used as Mild steel filler Rods ? and also Exactly what Metals Can be welded by tig ? Sorry for such stupid Questions but would Just Like To get it straigh in my head before I Set off at a gallop .

Look at Rapid Welding web site, they have a good selection of filler materials, and details of what they are used for. All metals that are weldable can be joined using the Tig process.

Yes mig wire can be used but mainly for sheet metal. You'll struggle with feed rate as metal gets thicker.

Look for ER-70 S6 filler rods for mild steel. Good all-round filler for most home projects.

ER70s-2 (aka A15) is the usual TIG suspect for general carbon steel work. ER70s-6 (aka A18) exists as straight lengths for TIG and is the usual suspect for MIG/MAG. It's to do with the deoxidising elements added and the gases used i.e. TIG is actually inert due to pure argon shielding whereas MIG is really MAG due to the CO2 (and often O2) added to argon. Maybe I'v been up too long as im even more confused now. The abovr link talks about a15 and a 18 rods and how one is better with pure argon and one with agron co2 mix ( or am I just reading it wrong?) I thaught tig always required pure argon or can I use the mid size argoshield I have for my mig?

No youre right, stick to pure argon for the tig.

As said pure argon only for TIG (CO2 and/or O2 will oxidise & trash the tungsten), the link is talking about how the different gases used for MIG and TIG effect filler wire chemistry

You cant Tig weld with Mig mix. You may not be trying to do this. Just in case this is part of your plan.

I had already bought the correct gas. Just got a bit confused

But most peoples idea of dyslexia is an incapability to read words but this is not always the case for many of us we can read the word (although trying to spell while wrighting ourselves can be a chalange and punctuation is one of the dark arts and a complete mystery to me when wrighting myself yet invaluable when trying to read ) but the contextual content can be lost on us and we may have to read somthing sevrral times for it to make sence and even then we can get the wrong gist of it. This does not however mean we are stupid Einstein was dyslexic. I have a better than average vocabulary and supposedly an IQ of around 150 and yet A sentence that is spoken and perfectly understood can be misconstrued when writen/read. Yet odly i would rather read a book than watch telly but thats probably my contrary nature.

These will do you mate.
Stainless is a little more involved depending on what you want to weld.
Most basic stuff is grade 304 and 316. A 308 is the right filler for 304 stainless and 316 welds 316. Some people just use 316 filler for both. 309's are handy to keep a few of as there will come times when you want to weld steel to stainless. This is the filler for that. Good luck.

I read the words. And can't injest what I have just read.

It takes to many re reading attempts for a fraction to sink in.

Unless you have dyslexia. It's so hard to comprihend.
