Im in the process of re spraying my car bonnet. Ive stripped all the old paint off so far.

Im now at the stage were im getting ready to spray with primer.

before i do this i was wondering whether its a good idea to skim a thin layer of filler over the metal?

I wouldn't. If there are very slight imperfections fill these with cellulose putty or knife stopper.

You'd be best using ang etching primer, this is designed to eat into metal very slightly and form a very tight bond.

You only need filler if you have dents. You don't need to etch steel, an ordinary primer is sufficient. Etch primer is for metals like aluminium, lead or galvanised steel which form oxide skins and need to be properly keyed.

Only use filler if you have to. I've been repainting a bonnet and there were a few shallow dents at the front edge. I filled these then sanded back with my DA, then sprayed. Next I've used knifing putty aka stopper to fill a few minor imperfections in the old paint, chips and a couple of light scratches which won't be filled with the paint. Next I'll be flatting this back with 400/600 and then painting with 2k gloss; it's a solid colour. Waste of time really as it'll be going on ebay and will probably sell for £20, just had some paint spare and wanted to get some more practice in before undertaking a few bits on my Alfa.

the panel felt a bit wavy so I've ended up giving it a light skim.

you should always etch steel imo weather it be a specific etch or a self etching primer

you should allways etch bare metal, it stick very well and is a great base for primer
