Filling / Covering a hole in a pipe

Hi all.

I've got a pipe that has been modified to remove a spur that was not required. This has left a hole in the side of the pipe that requires filling as the picture below shows

I'd like some advice on the best way of doing this and with the best chance that it will be watertight afterwards. I've made a little patch plate up (blurry picture below) that I was going to MIG round the outside then dress after to tidy up but before I do that is there a better method I've not considered?

Bit of 22mm copper pipe inside the hole then mig it like a plug weld to fill the hole in

I think what you're doing is grand. I'd maybe braze it on but welding will do , just test it for pinholes before fitting it all up.

I'd have liked to have brazed it on, but don't have the equipment to do so. I hadn't thought of plug welding it, the hole is about 10mm in diameter so it'd take some filling, but would look tidier afterwards. Think I'll give that a go, thanks! Worst case scenario I can cover the mess up afterwards with the plate

Could you slide the patch up inside and then plug weld it in?

solder it, flux and then tin both mating faces and then hold together and heat up, when solder oozes from the joint, let cool job done, normal electrical solder will do, or plumbers solder

Didn't know I could solder it. This might be a stupid question, but whats the melting temperature of solder? The pipe is a coolant pipe on an engine, and runs behind the exhaust manifold so gets pretty hot.

I'd thought about patching it from the inside but would struggle to clean the inside of the pipe well enough to not risk any contamination of the weld. At least with an outside patch I can clean the outside of the pipe properly and the inside of the patch.

the top and bottom panels of radiator are soldered. you would need a big electric soldering iron and bakers fluid. Recently re topped a land rover land rover radiator and repaired a fuel tank using soldering.

I would solder it less chance of a leak, if you use capillary action,ie have the patch very close to the shape of the pipe, then behind the patch it will self seal due to the flowing of the solder, no problem with temperature as said thats how rads are made ( or used to be)

soldering it would be fine .clean and tin the patch and pipe with solder using an acid flux either a large soldering iron or a propane blowtorch lay the patch over and heat till solder melts capilary action will seal it

Melting point of 60/40 Tin/Lead solder is around 183 degC, lead-free a little higher. A decent blowlamp would be sufficient for this job.
