Filter Regulator

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could tell me what air filter element size in microns is recommended for general automotive air tools such as grinders, sanders, drills, impacts etc.

I am pretty sure standard ones are 20 microns,

untill just now all ive ever used is just a water tap, the big inpact gun straight out the compressor so unfilterd

You only want a water trap followed by an oiler. Filters are for blasting, blow guns and paint and powder guns.

Oiler isn't essential as you can just add a drop or 2 of lube directly to the inlet of the tool

forget the oiler just 3 drops of oil per use in the tool
and thats fine. u need seperate hoses using an oiler

I only have an oiler as a mate gave me it along with a water trap and regulator that was unused in a factory they were gutting. Certainly wouldn't pay for one unless I employed people to ensure the tools were lubed. You need separate air lines for blasting and the like as you wouldn't waste an oil filter for air tools.

IMO oilers are a waste of time most of the time*. i have several that came bundeld with filters, the oilers never come out the box. they seem inpossible to setup just go from one extreem to another in a fraction of a turn ether oil level never changes in the resovor over months and tools complain from lack of oil. or the resovor is emptys in an afternoon and tools are blowing oil everywhere . even if you get an oiler working correctly i very much dought the oil mist gets to the tool but proably settels out on the walls of the airline.

as brightspark said oil the tool directly the oil actualy gets into the tool that way. that way you can use all your airlines for everything, nothing worse than realiseing you've just blown a car off with an airline full of oil.


* I do run inline oilers on my 1/8th pencil die grinders for porting cyl heads, but they run at very high speed and can do a few hours at a time. so i have a dedicated inline oiler for the tool. the die grinders all have a small inline oiler on the end of there 1mtr microbore airline, and a 600mm whip hose on the oiler.

My mate gave me mine when i started porting, i do intake and exhaust manifolds or when I'm smoothing castings for coating. Only just added the oiler to the set up and experience the same problems. As I'm in the process of redoing the workshop and airlines I may ditch it if i cant get it running right.

After speaking to Norgren they have said that a 40micron is the standard size.
