I have a set of filter housings that i want to use for my compressor, but only one has a filter in.
The pic below shows it, and it was previously set up with the air coming in from the left hand side and down the centre of the filter element.

Should it have another filter element for the other "bowl" ? (bowl/housings not in pic). If not, should the filter be after the empty bowl ?

That looks like a Dominik Hunter filter element. Unless there were parts inside the housing to turn it into a centrifugal separator then there should be a element in the housing. Depending on the grade of the element some flow inside to out and some from out to inside.

Is the other bowl not a water seperator?

To be a effective separator the air needs to be made to spin and slow down the air to throw the water droplets to the side of the bowl. Here is a diagram of a separator.

The air flows out the centre of the filter, I don't think I have ever seen it the other way[the housing casting usually has arrows].
I have a drip leg drain which looks like a filter, but doesn't have anything in it but it's not mounted next to the filter but at a low point in my air system.

The filter is domnick hunter and the housings compair.
The bowl with the filter has a float drain and the other one probably used to have one but was blocked off with a bolt.
They were originaly fitted just down stream of a hydrovane hv11.

I might just use them as they are.
