After reading The Yellow ardvark’s reply, I realise that my post refers to welding blankets and not fire blankets as requested by the OP so please disregard.
The last time I used anything like that it was a carb fire the o ring was damaged I just used my leather jacket easy peasy.
What kind of fire are we talking about?

You could, but I would suggest a "proper" welding blanket is thicker, more robust, more able to withstand higher temps in direct contact for longer periods of time.You can use a fire blanket as a welding blanket!
