Fire Escapes

Quick question lads , do treads have to be of solid construction these days , we used to have a 50mm upstand and 50mm downturn , but ive been told they need to be fully enclosed . is this right or wrong and wheres the best place to find out ?

I think I have the jist of it , fire escape can have open treads but internal staircase with full DDA Compliance has to be full tread , thats how Im seeing it ,please feel free to tell me Im wrong

Approved Document K of the Building Regulations is where you need to be looking - all escape stairs need to comply with the requirements in this document.

To summarise, you can only do open risers in single dwellings, provided you comply with specific limitations. For all other buildings you need to use closed risers - See Part K1, Sections 1.5 to 1.10.
