First(ish) bit of MMA

Hey all you MMA peeps I'm normally very at home in happy quiet TIG land but I needed to fill a join I'd done in some 6mm MS and the deposition rate of MMA allured me

So, machine is DC inverter running at 85A with 110V open circuit, 240V supply. Rods thus:


So I've done precisely 6" of MMA welding in my life, hence the ish. Here's my attempts on a bit of rusty 6mm as before. I'm trying to put a 1 - 2mm layer on top as the joint is already soundly fused from the TIG.


After I was happy (enough - hah!) with them I proceeded to do my job. Here's the start, a TIG joined bit of plate. Joint is ~450mm long. The right hand side needs about twice the fill of the left.


Here's the well fubared TIG join (it's had a meeting with Mr Concrete and Mr BFH to straighten it) on the other side. I'll be capping it.


So here you go, for your delectation.

Overall I'm happy enough with it, I know I could do better with practice and possibly larger rods would be easier, but for my first real "go" I'm happy with that.

Way to much weaving on that which looks like what your calling the capping run
Slag traps all through I should think. Grind it and see. There is a single run that's not bad for a first go, had you cleaned well between passes and run three breads straight it could have been a lot tidier imo

The weaving was very deliberate in an effort to maximize fill vs travel. Remember I want very little pen here as it's just to fill in the top 1mm ish. The width of the weave is ~1".

It's actually ground back now, will get a picture later. Re slag, it's not looking bad actually.

What you've got there is a plate of stacked 1" long beads...

Wide damnnit WIDE. The girth is the important bit. *Cough* or so I've been told...

I'd say the nice straight run is on the low side of amps, 5 or 10 more would get a better profile and penetration. Looks like an AC buzz box rather than an inverter was used m'lud.

That fact, coupled with the good rods, leaves no doubt as to where the blame lies

OCV should be more like 50v, TBH Id doubt your machine would be putting out 110 ocv.

I'm no expert and I am happy to be corrected but flicking from A to V on the knob should surely display the OCV when in MMA mode?

Out of curiosity, why don't you take out a multimeter and check the OCV?
It is not a dangerous thing (not a lot, at least )

The OCV should be a max of 90v on those machines so if its saying 110v then there is possibly a calibration issue with the display, It shouldn't really matter although 110v is likely to give a bit more than a tingle on a wet floor with damp gloves.

For a decent 6013 even sub 50v is fine for running its only cell'ys that you would want the 90V for.

I had a 330 amp DC diesel welder generator with a 100v OCV, it whistled while it welded. Never got a shock off it though.

90 or 97ocv I think they should be.either way 110 isn't going to do much damage.those machines don't like cells regardless of the volts. There is a big 50 or 100 ohm bleed resistor across them behind the display iirc.if that has gone open circuit the volts will jump a bit.might be worth getting a meter across the machine output

Years ago things like quasi arcs would always have 100v taps this became less common as it could be an issue for those with pacemakers.

The specs on the Ewm seam to quote 90v which is common unless the op machine is an oddball.

I'll pop meter over terminals when next at it. I take it I just want 200VDC range and apply leads respectively?

It's a Triton 160DC TIG. The last red one before they went white.

Yes you can measure the ocv the way you described welding currents need a clamp type meter, tbh unless your needing to weld to a wps its only really to satisfy your own curiosity

The weave is a little on the wide side and doesn't look as good as the single stringer so you can do it quite well you just chose not to. Either way good effort, it's no where near as good as your Tig but I could say exactly the same about my self as my Tig is better than my mma. Keep at it though as it is a wonderful process.

Cheers mate. Like you say, I'm way happier with TIG as a process.

Still, at least it's not MIG monkey work
