First real welds....

Hi all,

Yes another first welds post! Ive been migging for a while now, and my machine has an mma output on it too, had a spare half hour so thought id actually use it.

Welds are at 80a with 2.5 6013 rods on 4mm plate cleaned before i welded, pics are in order i did the welds.

First pic is just some beads, burnt through on one as i had it at 100a, way too much for me atm! also ive noticed all the beads have a hollow at the finish?

Second pic is the back of the first welds.

Third pic is the vertical beads as you look at them which i just did over the top of the first lot after a bit of slag knocking..!

Last pic is just some beads i did on the back of the plate to finish some rods id used.

Let rip with any comments, i work mostly on a farm so would like to get better at mma as mig is a pain in a building with the wind blowing through!

Nobody going to give an opinion? Or has my thread just got lost in everyone else's?? If anyone does reply, any reason my sip Merlin 185 ac buzzbox should produce a much better looking weld that was way easier to start the arc on? Same current same rods same piece of steel?!

Cheers guys, I did some more with the sip and got much more uniform welds, tried to go back over the end of the weld to fill the crater as I've read in another thread and that worked, I'll keep at it, see if I can find some 6mm, only ever seem to use 4 8 10 and 12 tbh?!

Try to weld lengthways along the metal. Use a whole rod at a time if you can. You get a much better idea of what to look for in a weld pool this way.

The AMP setting is a bit high which is obvious from the holes you have blown through the metal.

You can also tell that you're running too hot because of how runny some of those welds look.

I would recommend that you drop the AMP by about 10 to start with.

Secondly I would recommend you get some chalk and draw straight lines on the steel.

(Try following these chalk lines whilst welding).

And also pay close attention to your: rod angle/ travel speed/ weave.

Don't be afraid to slow down a little and let the bead build.

You need to try and learn to read that orange puddle also.

This orange puddle is what your weld will be once it has cooled and the slag has been chipped away.
